This impressive software provides the same steadfast protection of well-known antivirus programs, yet it's surprisingly free.
Avast Home Edition guards your PC and the network with multiple shields that scan executables and files. You can select parameters for scanning, and even choose wildcards to exclude specific file types. You can adjust the sensitivity level for the program's detectors when it comes to scanning downloaded files, instant messages, e-mails, and a host of P2Ps. Its efficient interface opens up window after window to tweak its settings to your liking, for novice to advanced level protection.
Though it took quite some time to run, we're impressed with this application's boot-time antivirus scan. Fortunately, if you're in a pinch you can bypass it. If malicious contents are detected, Avast comes to the rescue with handy virus cleanup tools. Some decent PC controls are even handed out here. You can block certain URLs and file operations, such as writing to files or even renaming, deleting or formatting them.
With immediate real-time protection, clockwork updates, and much more, this free software is highly regarded in our book.

Version: Avast Home Edition 4.7.1043
Pros: Just because it's free doesn't mean you have to compromise on quality. Avast does all the anti-virus work by itself, using it's comprehensive yet powerful resident scanning and on-the-go shields to provide you with full real-time protection. It has all the features of an expensive program, such as an accurate/outstanding detection abilities, plus a nice pack of neat features working together to protect you any harm from e-mails, surfing to file-sharing and such. In my opinion avast is definitely the best choice for free anti-virus if not rivals those of the commercial ones.

"YAY! Something I can use for FREE!"
Pros: Not being cheap or anything, but this is the best security software I've used! Since now it's intergrated for using less RAM and comes with more free security, why spend so much on others such as Kaspersky or ZoneAlarm? This program is very accurate and highly recommended! It comes with skins also, for people who like to customize!
Cons: Nothing so far :)

"Nice options, Good at catching adware, etc."
Pros: I've been using for about six months now. It has a variety of options for what you want scanned, it's customizable for email, files, p2p, etc. keeps an updated database of information, good at catching adware, etc. even when you don't ask it to. Gives and option of keeping the adware file in a separate storage area yet still make the program functionable. I really like this.
