I think avast is the most democratic, amazing and generous softwate in the net. It provides safety and protection for home users who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford it. While providing protection for us it protects everyone.

The scan was over two hours in, when my internet connection became so slow that I couldn't load a single page.
Summary
Most reviewers here seem to be highly computer literate. As a regular user, I thought I would submit my layman review anyway. More of us should, because if you're not familiar with all of the terminology used, the reviews don't help anyway.
I have a new Dell Inspiron laptop running Vista. Maybe this only pertains to my particular situation, and could have been a fluke. However, I don't want any software that takes that long to scan my system, and all but disconnects my internet connection. -
"Great realtime, very slow scanning"

The realtime protection is good, and it's very quiet and light while not doing a scan. Good detection.
Cons
Slow scanning, will take a few hours to scan a multi account system.
Summary
I switched from Norton to Avast! after norton ran out. I really noticed a speed increase, considering that Norton bogs down a computer quite a bit. The boot time scan is quite useful when you're infected with a file that boots with the computer. I highly recommend Avast! as your AV, it works better than AVG, but I have had little experience with it.
AVG has apparently had problems with their detection lately. AVAST! is one of the oldest AV's out there. It's been around since 1988. Yet it is still one of the best there is. Strangely enough, they've not succumbed to the software bloat that Symantec/Norton and Mcafee have.

Great product, it really don't slow down your PC and have great protection against viruses, spywares and malwares.

Well nothing.
Summary
Because it has saved my PC from many Viruses,. spyware and malware. I was about to format my whole PC when I found this, so it even saved me from formating my PC. At the begging my PC was very slow, it even freezes at some points. when i installed the Avast it really killed all the viruses and even some hidden rootkit. I have tried my ANTI Virus Software, but no one detect these hidden rootkits which very found in system folder. So Avast has excellent protect against viruses. I really like this product.

Avast is almost the best antivirus for homeusers.Good detection of virus, worms and trojans.Removal is very effective.Realtime protection is strong, it's good at stopping threats before they enter your pc.Updates often.
Cons
You have to register within 30 days.Runs high on memory.Interface is not good.It hides many options and makes it very hard to use.To many icons in taskbar.To be honest Avg is better than avast.Because it has better detection, removal and protection.
