Editors' review

This impressive software provides the same steadfast protection of well-known antivirus programs, yet it's surprisingly free.

Avast Home Edition guards your PC and the network with multiple shields that scan executables and files. You can select parameters for scanning, and even choose wildcards to exclude specific file types. You can adjust the sensitivity level for the program's detectors when it comes to scanning downloaded files, instant messages, e-mails, and a host of P2Ps. Its efficient interface opens up window after window to tweak its settings to your liking, for novice to advanced level protection.

Though it took quite some time to run, we're impressed with this application's boot-time antivirus scan. Fortunately, if you're in a pinch you can bypass it. If malicious contents are detected, Avast comes to the rescue with handy virus cleanup tools. Some decent PC controls are even handed out here. You can block certain URLs and file operations, such as writing to files or even renaming, deleting or formatting them.

With immediate real-time protection, clockwork updates, and much more, this free software is highly regarded in our book.

"Ok if you don't mind all the pop up advertising"

    July 30, 2014   |   By Zowie2010

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2014 2014.9.0.2021

    Pros

I have used it on my computers for several years and haven't had anything get by it. However, when I ran a scan of one of my computers with Microsoft Security Essentials, it found some infected files Avast hadn't.

    Cons

Several times a week, you will see a pop up ad trying to sell you one of their other products. I haven't found a way to stop them, and they don't disappear until you click on them.

    Summary

I finally got fed up with the pop up ads and went to Microsoft Security Essentials.

Fast, efficient, traps nasties and deals with them.
Also checks the state of installed software and advises on updates which is very useful.

    Summary

Download it yesterday and forget all about the "McKaper" and all the rest of the big money players.

    "Fast, Light weight and reliable."

    July 26, 2014   |   By ssingh36

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2014 2014.9.0.2021

    Pros

Had been using avast since my college days and it's been over 10 years now. Have tried many different antivirus and keep coming to avast every-time I land in trouble or my system is infected badly. Love the boot-scan feature. It's very light on resources and never has any conflicts with apps. I can always rely on avast to keep things clean for me.

    Cons

Occasional pop-ups cold be annoying. Hope it had a firewall in the basic version as well :-P

"ALL XP users: The Avast FREE Antivirus 2014 is THE one!"

    July 26, 2014   |   By JRam9364

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2014 2014.9.0.2021

    Pros

Honestly, even this FREE version is miles better than the paid versions of most top rated Antivirus software' programs to date!!! I still feel embarrassed for having stuck with the utterly useless Microsoft Security Essentials all these years! Only when they removed support for XP did I start hunting around for an alternative - with Avast FREE Antivirus 2014 I struck gold... they have promised to continue to support XP for at least another 2 to 3 years. By then... well... I might have moved on due to poor support by other essential programs etc..

    Cons

None, really... though the Browser Cleanup is not particularly to my liking..As a Firefox user my precious Extensions can get interfered with... depending - easy enough to restore them. So for time being that free service is not for me. Also. still not brave enough to allow Avast to to do preliminary scanning at Startup - I'm sure it's ok!

    Summary

Have a friend who has a Pro version of Kapersky (given to her by her Bank) along with Avast Free Antivirus 2014... first of all, they don't interfere with each other (can't promise that to Norton users) & secondly she found Avast protecting her from time to time from malicious websites ahead of Kapersky!!! So wonderful... it just works silently in the background - never ever hogs resources. Try it out, if you haven't before - you can always uninstall it if you prefer another...

    Updated on Jul 26, 2014

One big con, I recall now, is that the Browser Cleanup is set up to change your browser home page to Yahoo and search engine to Yahoo and Bing without providing user an option to opt out! This is the one behaviour they must stop!

"Solid but can be obtrusive with false positives"

    July 26, 2014   |   By jkirk1626

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2014 2014.9.0.2021

    Pros

Runs in background. Automatically updates itself. Brief popup alerts go away automatically and approach the right balance between informing and staying out of the way.

    Cons

False positives can be obtrusive. It flags and prevents updates to common programs like Google Chrome and Firefox. Avast offers a link to create exceptions for them, but the exceptions never work, and Avast flags and prevents future updates when Avast is on. Disabling then re-enabling Avast is an easy workaround for upgrading other progs like browsers, but Avast's "add an exception" links ought to work; they don't.

    Summary

The main characteristics recommending Avast are its abilities to do most of its functions in the background so users can be free to do other things. Too many antivirus programs bog users down with incessant choices that the programs ought to handle on their own. Avast will let you get into the nitpicky OCD customization weeds if you want, but grownup advanced users who actually want to get work done will appreciate Avast's hands free automation.
