For those who like their customization in-house, the Avant Browser's latest update might appeal to you. Built on an IE-rendering engine, Avant takes off in a different direction--IE if it were being produced by a small firm instead of Microsoft.
The browser is sufficiently fast, preloaded with two dozen similar skins as well as tabbed browsing and modular toolbars that let you move around and hide the Status bar, Toolbar, Search window, and navigation controls. The Menu bar, though, is counterintuitively pinned to the upper-right corner, and icons for proprietary functions, such as an in-page search term highlighting toggle, aren't instantly comprehensible.
Avant can save personalized data online, making bookmarks and form content accessible from any machine. Around the same size as Firefox, Avant includes many features that are available to Firefox users only through plug-ins--such as automatic form fillers. The Full Screen view autohides all menu bars, a nice touch, but certain plug-ins--notably Flash--didn't work on Windows Vista.
Avant is a good browser with some nice built-in features and interface-customization options, but the lack of extensibility and Vista problems don't help. We recommend it to users who want a Microsoft-based engine but think that Internet Explorer 7 is a pain.

What's new in this version: Version 11.7 build 11 fixed the bug that caused the AutoFill feature in the My Information menu not to work.

Cant use tabs and open another window at the same time - absolutley useless for anyone like me using two screens and copying stuff between web applications.

I loved avant when it first came out - then I found it crashing a lot so gave up - thought it would have improved by now but oh dear it hasnt. Might be great for simple web browsing but the inability two have two browser windows each using tabs is a big no for me. Also I would have epected that being based on the IE code it would have handled the outlook web interface better than firefox - it doesnt - cant seem to tell he differenc between pop ups and new tabs - a crazy quirky product that doesnt seem to work very well

If you can use IE, this is a breeze. The tab browsing is quite nice as well as the ability to use left or right clicks to move back or forth while surfing.
Cons
Some issues with removing data from Temperory internet files.
Sometimes browser locks during search.Summary
This is a great option for Windows users. The transition is seamless. Most hotkeys are similar.

Fast. Doesn't use a lot of resources. "Lightweight" browser with many features variously accessible. Cleaner than current builds of IE.
Cons
Display has gone downhill on this build. The previous build was extremely clean.
Summary
Use Orca instead, currently. Which even tips the hat to Avant. I expect Avant's next build to be better. I had no problems with Avant until this build on either XP (which I had and will have, once I buy another...something, most likely power supply, could be board, could be CPU and/or...) or Vista (which isn't bad once the scheise has been stripped).

I use Avant all the time and firefox as a backup browser for when a glitch in IE happens like Java doesn't work of flash is out to lunch for whatever reason.

For the build 12 it says build 11, so where is build 12 or is that a missed type"O" in the title line for this build??

Updated on Sep 23, 2008One thing I think needs to be fixed is the Auto Fill password screen. This needs to be set to "ALWAYS ON TOP" as when clicking to edit a P/W, the screen stays behind the auto fill drop down and if you have lots in the auto fill you can't even see that the screen has come up behind the dropdown and you get a beep saying you can't do anything else until you input your password or close that screen.
I was just lucky enough to be able to see the very right edge if the P/W screen to click the (X) to close it, or I would still be staring at it wonder why everything was frozen? It should also be set to cancel if no P/W is entered and you press "RETURN" or "ESCAPE" So it would always be better if ALL password screens were defaulted to "ALWAYS ON TOP"
Hope to see that corrected soon.
