Avant Browser allows users to browse multiple Web sites simultaneously and to block all unwanted pop-up pages and Flash ads automatically. The integrated cleaner helps users clear all traces and maintain privacy. The built-in Yahoo and Google search engines enable users to search for Web pages, images, groups, directories, lyrics, software, and news on the Internet. Avant Browser provides options for blocking the download of Flash media, pictures, video, sounds, and ActiveX components, so users can efficiently use their bandwidth and speed up page loading. All opened pages can be stopped, refreshed, closed, or arranged with one click. It also comes with built-in RSS reader. Its similar Web sites bar displays Web sites, which are related to the opened Web pages.

Starting from the Internet Explorer engine, Avant Browser adds useful capabilities, such as grouped favorites, an RSS reader, and tabbed browsing. The first thing we noticed upon launch was the aesthetically pleasing skin that came as the default with Avant Browser, but you can choose from among many preloaded skins in the Tools menu. The tabbed-browsing feature lets you quickly switch among Web sites, rather than having to shuffle through several browser instances in the Windows taskbar. If you visit several Favorites often, you can save them as a group and open the whole group with one click. When you shut down the program, Avant Browser remembers which windows were open and launches them the next time it starts up. You also can automatically refresh all windows, or only the current one, at regular intervals. A simple pop-up blocker works in most cases, but it was powerless against some floating banners and other, more obscure pop-up methods. Overall, we found Avant Browser a great alternative to Internet Explorer, with useful features that make browsing even more efficient.

  "I agree with jakebe2, this is a bad release."

  Pros: The tabbed interface.

  Cons: Like jakebe2, I have used this product for several years. I have one question for Anderson (the developer): What were you thinking when you came out with this release!? This is horrible. I wrote him and told him so and said that I wanted to go back to the 10.58 release. He said to go to the "forum" and deal with this release. No dice Anderson. I uninstalled it and installed IE 7. Bye, bye Avant Browser! Avant lost all my setting, and of course, reset my home page to Avant. If CNET plans on purging all previous reviews of this product then they should also adjust the 'star' ratings to the latest reviews. The 4 1/2 stars are based on previous releases of the product. All reviews of the latest release have been negative.

  Pros: Still the same good browser. Search engine configuring a bit screwed up. See section on Cons for fix.

  "Excellent browser"

  Pros: Has tabbed browsing as many other browsers. Is very secure with a very little amount of security holes. Contains many features and is easy to block multimedia and ActiveX. Google Toolbar compatible.

  Pros: Even on dialup, the download is quick and setup is a breeze. It is quick loading. The tabs are fantastic to use - especially if you use multiple windows. I run two Proboards and find the tabs invaluable. As a matter of fact, Avant Browser is the only Browser that I encourage my visitors to use.

  Version: Avant Browser 11.0 build 21

  "Poor upgrade. Wait for better version to be released."

  Pros: Nothing

  Cons: When looking at reviews notice the date and version of the software being reviewed. When this update came out I along with numerous others wrote negative reviews about the trouble we were having. I just noticed all the version 11 reviews except one (and it's negative) have disappeared off here! Makes me wonder if Download.com has some vested interest in this software and doesn't want negative reviews posted!! I have used Avant Browser for years and loved it but this version 11 update was a total foul up! I had to uninstall Avant Browser and go back to version 10. I spent two hours trying to reconfigure it and reset preferences so it would work right and finally just gave up. My home pages wouldn't open when opening the browser. Instead the last opened page came up. I could never get Google set as my search engine. It would always bring up an "Oops can't open" page when entering a search. Everything I tried was out of whack and not working as it had been and should be.
