Editors' review

Auslogics Duplicate File Finder is a basic program that allows users to find and delete duplicate files taking up valuable space on their hard drives. This is a helpful utility for users who find themselves with limited disk space and can't figure out why.

The program's interface is simple and extremely easy to use. Users simply select the folders they want to search in, set the matching criteria and file types, and click the Scan button. The program displays a list of duplicate files, allowing users to select and delete those that are not needed. That's really all there is to it. The program was quite intuitive and we didn't particularly need any guidance to use it, but we were disappointed by the lack of Help file. Although there is a Help menu, it leads to the publisher's Web site on which there is only a four-question list of frequently asked questions. This oversight is really our single complaint about the program; it's a bit of a one-trick pony, but it is quick and effective. In fact, we had run a similar program before testing Auslogics Duplicate File Finder that had already deleted the vast majority of our duplicate files, but this program found a few more. Color us impressed.

Auslogics Duplicate File Finder is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users; even those with limited system maintenance experience will find it easy to use.

    "NagWare--but it is functional"

    July 30, 2014   |   By meinthesun

Version: Auslogics Duplicate File Finder 3.5.4

    Pros

    Actually did find duplicates.

    Cons

    1. Nags you to buy other software (Nagware)
    2. Be careful! Requests security permissions it shouldn't need--potentially Malware
    3. Did not uninstall on first try.

    Summary

It works, but then it gives (misleading?) prompts that try to get you buy other software. In my experience, apps that do this are malware or try to lead the user to install malware from unverified sources. Uninstalling.

"Just used it on a 500GB drive and it zipped through it"

    February 27, 2014   |   By tjazzzzz

Version: Auslogics Duplicate File Finder 3.5.0

    Pros

Easy, nice interface, finds everything I want it to find

    Cons

    None for me

    Summary

I have just used the latest version on my brother's HP Pavillion laptop that has Windows 7 Ultimate on it and a 500GB hard drive. Used it to sort his photos. He's been playing with his new camera the last couple of months taking hundreds or rather thousands of photos and his wife tried sorting them for scrapbooking projects, but ended up creating lots of duplicates in different folders. Those pictures were huge and there were literally hundreds of duplicates, so the cleanup helped reclaim a huge chunk of space.

    "Includes molasses"

    February 25, 2014   |   By promytius

Version: Auslogics Duplicate File Finder 3.5.0

    Pros

Installs and uninstalls easily; easy to follow instructions, simple interface, simple choices; in English and in color...

    Cons

Very slow; I mean really slow - please see summary below for details.

    Summary

I have used this in the past, the wayback past, and it worked ok then; however this current version is intolerably s-l-o-w.
My system is an Athlon 8-core CPU in W7home premium with 4GB of DDR3, so it should scream through any sorting thrown at it. I used this product 3 times.
1st. Just a few hundred files in one folder, find the dupes and send them to the recycling bin so I can see what happened. No problems, took a while didn't really pay attention to time.
2nd. Took a terabyte external with literally hundreds of thousands of images from as far back as the early 90's, transferred and left unorganized on the drive. Chose several similarly titled folders and ended up with over 300,000 images to analyze. The program ran almost 30 hours and while it had reached the third stage before bedtime, when AI checked in the morning, the progress bar hadn't moved. Abandoned, feeling it must have been an unfair test somehow. I did not record the numbers.
3rd. Selected two folders with suspected dupes, about 8,000 files. Started about 6 PM. Same deal. Woke up at 6 AM and it had processed just over 3,000 files "moved to recycling" which was about 1,000 more than where it was at bedtime.
I find that unacceptably slow. The moving to recycling was massively slow - it displays what file it is deleting (a waste of processing time) and you can sit there and watch the nothing-happening in real-time; it will display a file name and you can read it forwards/backwards, translate it, make anagrams from it, before the next file is processed. I don't know what it thinks it is doing, but it obviously has an inferior algorithm punching itself in the face in the background.
I'd say it was beyond useless all the way to infuriating, for this user. I could have sworn that back in the XP days (does anyone still remember ME, XP??) that it was a screaming fast program; I must be confusing it with something else.
Anyway, bottom line, if your computer can sit idle and not be used for days on end, go ahead and use this for finding dupes; me, I'm going to spend it looking for a program that works a LOT faster.
Remember though, it is free, so complaining is somewhat cancelled out by the thought that "you get what you pay for." Pay nothing, ...

    "Not bad, not great"

    February 22, 2014   |   By ThatGuyDesigns

Version: Auslogics Duplicate File Finder 3.5.0

    Pros

Pretty simple and straight forward, searches subfolders as well.

    Cons

Doesn't find everything... I had 2 files in the same folder, same size and only difference was that one file had an 's' at the end of the name... didn't find it. Yet it found duplicates that were more dissimilar in the file name without any problems.

    Summary

Not bad, but seems to have missed the more obvious duplicates... will have to run another program to see if it catches them.

"Used to be really good, now not so much"

    February 20, 2014   |   By dr_jon

Version: Auslogics Duplicate File Finder 3.5.0

    Pros

Works really well *up to v 3.4.2) and has some handy filters

    Cons

As of version 3.5.0 won't compare all file types without having another Auslogics product installed, which is $49 (so 3.4.2 is the one to get).
    Won't search network drives.

    Summary

I think 3.4.2 is still good, so I'll go with 3.5 stars (loses 1 for no network drives, 0.5 for lack of easy selection of files to delete). Still well worth having IMHO, just not the current version...

    "It actually does check contents"

    February 03, 2014   |   By tjazzzzz

Version: Auslogics Duplicate File Finder 3.4.2

    Pros

Enough options and sorting filters for any custom search

    Cons

    none for me

    Summary

From what I understand, you have to check the Ignore Filenames option and the program will check by contents. I've never had a problem with it not finding real duplicates on my computer. I was able to sort my photos using this program. When you make slide shows or use photos for other projects, you often get the same pictures saved in several different folders. Once done with a project, I just use this program and get extra copies deleted from all but one folder (you can set which folder to keep photos in). Works great every time.

"Very easy and versatile once you get the hang of it"

    January 19, 2014   |   By Tom-o-Hawk

Version: Auslogics Duplicate File Finder 3.4.2

    Pros

You can search for duplicates using different criteria, expand or narrow down your search, choose to ignore file names, select file types to search, set the size, etc.

    Cons

Some of the things this program can do are not immediately obvious. For instance, you can expand the folder tree on the left and right-click on folders for more options, but I didn't see where it would tell me this could be done. Just found it by accident.

    Summary

This program may take some time getting used to, but once you click through everything, right-click on a few things to see if there may be additional options, then it becomes the best program of its kind. I have a couple of cousins who don't like to pay for software and I've installed quite a few programs from Auslogics on their computers. They all work great. I consider the name Auslogics as a quality seal of sorts.
