Defragging your hard drive is an important part of system maintenance; regular defragging can improve performance by making sure that all the parts of each file are stored together, which makes it faster to access them. Auslogics Disk Defrag is a simple way to take care of this task. With a straightforward interface and a few useful extras, Auslogics Disk Defrag is a great choice for users of all skill levels.

The program's interface is plain and intuitive, featuring the classic cluster map that displays fragmented, unfragmented, and empty space. Auslogics Disk Defrag took 14 seconds to run a scan of our hard drive and determine that it was 17 percent fragmented. We clicked the defrag button and waited 10 minutes for the program to do its thing. In the time it took us to go make a snack, Auslogics Disk Defrag had tidied up our hard drive. We double-checked its work by running the built-in Windows Disk Defragmenter, and it confirmed that our disk was now 0 percent fragmented.

The program is easy enough for just about anyone to use, but it also has a few advanced features, such as options to schedule automatic defrags and defrag individual folders, that will be attractive to more advanced users. There's a well-written PDF user manual available on Auslogic's Web site, but most people won't need it. Overall, we found Auslogics Disk Defrag to be a simple, powerful tool, and we recommend it.

    "Fast but Risky with Data..."

    September 30, 2014   |   By Hawaiitech

    Version: Auslogics Disk Defrag 4.5.5

    Pros

Works fast at defragging windows computers. Can improve boot and system performance from 10-35% from my experiences. free. Can defrag a system in a hurry.

    Cons

Sometimes causes system corruption to where windows wont boot up normally into desktop. I work at a computer repair shop and have stopped using disk defrag because it just simply isn't worth the risk. Yesterday I cloned a hard drive and the cloned drive worked flawlessly, then I defragged the cloned drive with Disk Defrag and it booted to a black screen. A few weeks ago after a virus and system cleanup on a machine that booted fine I used disk defrag to polish the machine up and it booted to a black screen; using task manager and open: explorer.exe would work intermittently. I had to reinstall the OS.... Another case was a clients computer that was slow and needed cleanup. The drive was older but reported good health, so I ran Disk Defrag after cleanup and it made certain programs not function correctly. Not trying to bad mouth Auslogics but DD can cause system instability. Does DD consolidate data in a way that it loses data? RISKY

    Summary

Some drives it works great, impressive speed can equal impressive results. Some drives it causes system crashes, instability, corruption, data loss etc. Probably wont use this program on clients computers anymore, but will continue to use it personally.

    Updated on Sep 30, 2014

P.S. Does Disk Defrag see bad sectors on hard drives? And does it allocate data to bad sectors? The problems I experienced happened after using both Defrag and Defrag+Optimization settings on different computers.

    "Does not coalesce free space"

    September 02, 2014   |   By ChrisAllen CNET

    Version: Auslogics Disk Defrag 4.5.5

    Pros

Defrags all files except a dozen mysterious "unmovable" small files. oooWOOooo Gives option to move files into "fast" region near front of disk.

    Cons

Does not coalesce free space. So it isn't a complete defrag.

"Last 2 versions didn't consolidate free space, and...!?"

    June 18, 2014   |   By scottls59901

    Version: Auslogics Disk Defrag 4.5.5

    Pros

    It's Very Fast, and free.

    Seems to improve performance.

I've tried Many free/paid defrags, but this is the only one that increased performance.

    Cons

I Run as Admin after 2 no-activity restarts (then wait 30min for HD to settle down...), move system files to a faster part of the HD, but after restart there are always large areas of free space not consolidated?

If I use their delete Junk files option..., performance decreased.

My AV didn't like the harmless PUP AD, in their latest version.

    Summary

Old version has to be uninstalled first, or installer will offer to uninstall then (I had to temp disable my AV until after restart).

I submitted a detailed trouble report to Auslogics Tech Support, but no reply as yet?

I tried their Pro version, with it's umpteen defrag choices (Very Confusing!), but it's always running... slowed my computer (their tech support couldn't help?).

    Updated on Jul 3, 2014

On my 1st AV scan the download was deleted, because of the non-malicious PUP.

    "Seems best"

    June 16, 2014   |   By Scree

    Version: Auslogics Disk Defrag 4.5.5

    Pros

Pretty well designed and does the job well.

    Cons

Last update sneakily added a one-time scheduled task AD display!

    Summary

This still seems to be the best of the free defraggers around today, but they are starting to get shady with pushing ads. Oh the tradeoff of being free...
