- "Antispyware that's not a wash"
- Version reviewed: Ashampoo AntiSpyWare 1.60
Ashampoo Antispyware has been given a major-point upgrade, and there's no doubt that it looks better. But is version 2 worth the $30 tag?
The program has a bothersome registration process required for downloading, something that's unfortunately becoming more common these days. However, it also has a generous 40-day trial period. The tabbed interface looks good and is clearly labeled, making navigation intuitive. The main window shows you Active functions, and one click lets you Deactivate them. The right-side column contains scan Statistics, spyware-signature file version and a link to updates, and quick links to run all the major scans.
The left-side tabs manage the Scans, Quarantine, Logs, Preferences, and Tools. There are a host of features in the last two, from whitelists and schedulers to an Internet tracks cleaner and an LSP Viewer to help manage WinSock extensions. Scan options include a full system scan--prepare for a long wait--as well as options to slice that into specific types of scans such as hard drive or Registry-only. We encountered zero problems when mucking about. No viruses were found, either.
However, there've been numerous false positive complaints, and scans detect all of your Internet cookies as minor threats. Still, Ashampoo Antispyware is a breeze to handle and has most of the antispyware angles covered.

Version: Ashampoo AntiSpyWare 1.60
"Much better than previous versions."
Pros: 697,158 sigs in it's data base ain't bad at all. It's not as heavy as the older versions and scan times are faster. Comes with many extras and a few skins. Also, it can be purchased cheap but with a price (cons). I use it and recommend it.
Cons: The price is spam. Once you buy or sign up for a triel key the spam starts. This is backed up by "McAfee Site Advisor". So, I created an email account in aol just for this purpose and unless the spam emails are something I might be interested in, I delete all of them with a quickness.

Version: Ashampoo AntiSpyWare 1.60
"Average - Try the free ones first"
Pros: Installs easily, no rebooting. Easy interface to figure out. Graphically looks nice. You can do a quick scan or complete system scan. Downloads sig updates with no problem. Trial version is a full featured 40 day trial. Found a lot of infections. Removed them with no problem. Uninstall is easy too.
Cons: Doesn't seem to be doing any better than the free ones I usually use like AdAware and Spybot. I would use those first. Had to 'give email address for the key for the 40 day trial - I seemed to be getting a lot of junk mail after that, I got a feeling it was from that. I don't think its worth it to buy this thing..however it would be worth it if you got an infection on your computer you can scan it with the 40 day trial. Seemed a little slower on the scanning - full system scan took about an hour on a 80 GB drive about half full with an AMD 64 processor. Found a few 'false' infections and doesn't really give you any info on what it is it found compared to Norton and others. Try it but don't buy it without checking out the free ones. Good luck!
