Army Men: Toys in Space

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on February 26, 2009

Like the previous Army Men games, Toys in Space puts you in command of a team of toy soldiers. In this installment, you lead six squads of five to six soldiers each against aliens or enemy troops. You have several weapons at your disposal, including bazookas and flamethrowers. But the game suffers from the same problems as its predecessors: unfriendly controls and the awful AI of friendly soldiers. The graphics fall somewhere between the average and the not-so-good for 1999, when the game came out. Nowadays, they just look bad. Despite some good features, including a multiplayer option, the pain of dealing with the clunky interface outweighs all the pleasure. Some die-hard strategy fans may not mind downloading a mediocre 30MB demo to see plastic soldiers battling in space, but we doubt there will be many of them.

Publisher's Description

From 3DO:

Sarge, the heroic Green defender of freedom, returns to the battlefield in this latest edition in the Army Men series, Army Men: Toys in Space (see screenshot). This time Sarge must confront a bewildering variety of new enemies when Plastro enlists the aid of the deadly Bug-Eyed Aliens. Sarge must now combat both his old Tan nemesis and the new plastic alien menace. During a battle in the backyard, Sarge meets Tina Tomorrow, the leader of the heroic Space Troopers, who forms an alliance with the Green Army. With a powerful new class of toys at his side, Sarge just might have a chance to rid the world of evil.

This demo contains two full levels of interactive gameplay:

  • Space Saviors: Sarge and the troops must help Tina Tomorrow defend her headquarters from the advancing alien menace. You must not let the aliens take control of the Space Troopers HQ--the fate of the galaxy rests on your shoulders.

  • Demolition Den (Multiplayer Level): here is a chance for you and your friends to really tear it up in the living room. Demolition Den is a new, action-packed, multiplayer level made specifically for hours of plastic-melting fun. Help Sarge and the boys battle their way around the television set, the coffee table, and the deadly vacuum cleaner. This brand new Toys in Space multiplayer demo utilizes all of the new features included in the full version of the game, available in October.
