"More complicated than doing it via CLI"

      August 11, 2008   |   By mikirby

      Version: Not Found

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I cannot for the life of my understand why a GUI SSH app would be more complicated to set up than a command line to do the same thing in terminal.

True, once you've puzzled out the unorthodox interface, you can start all your needed ssh services with a click of a button** (**once you wrap your mind around the local client process being called "AVPN Server".) But the same thing is true if you use the freeware CLIX to set up a terminal command to do it, or one of several other free, lightweight utilities. And believe me, if you don't already know how to set up a terminal SSH command to to what you need to do, you're not going to be able to figure out how to get this app to do it.

It's a shame, because the programmer obviously put a lot of work and care into this and the basic idea is powerful. But this is a case of a solution being much more complicated than the problem it's supposed to solve.

      "Extremely valuable utility"

      June 18, 2008   |   By Kilohoku

      Version: AlmostVPN 1.5.3

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Even though I do know how to do this by hand, and would have no trouble doing any of the operations done by AlmostVPN manually, I still use this every day and find it invaluable, especially when traveling. By patiently reading the documentation (which does exist, despite the previous comment), I have set it up so that anywhere I go, I can have essentially the same connectivity to file servers, mail sending and receiving functionality, and secure access even to unsecured POP servers, etc., by connecting via ssh to accounts on the opposite side of whatever firewalls I happen to encounter. The true value of this utility is in making multiple such connections fast, and the extra handy capability to work seamlessly with mail servers without having to change port numbers, etc., is a true bonus.

Usage hint: Remember to shut down your almostVPN connections before sleeping your computer or moving to a new destination. If you forget to do this, sometimes it is necessary to cycle the almostVPN server off and on a couple of times to clear stray old connections when you start it back up in the new location.

Caveat: I haven't used this with Leopard yet, but am looking forward to doing so. It has worked perfectly for me for nearly 2 years on Tiger, modulo the above usage hint. Any comments from Leopard users?

      "Too little documentation to use"

If you can figure out how to use this package with the negligible documentation provided, then you probably don't need to buy it because you will know enough to set up freeware equivalents or use Terminal. If you need even rudimentary instruction, then this is not likely to of use because it comes with virtually no instructions. The documentation is so minimal that it doesn't even explain the limitations of the demo mode.

      "Extremely complicated UI, bugs"

      December 04, 2006   |   By merrillfb

      Version: AlmostVPN 1.2

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used the original AVPN 0.9 revisions for some time ; the interface for that was almost as complicated as using the command line to set up a tunnel (I had to refer to the ssh man page to configure it), but the autostart features were handy.

With the AVPN Pro, it is now arguably MORE complicated to try and use this than to use a command line. Much feature support has been added for additional service types, making the UI even less comprehensible than before. I'm talking about configuring a simple ssh tunnel for a VNC connection.

Also not helping is that the import of config from AVPN apparently doesn't work. My working AVPN config does not start in AVPN Pro, it appears to be attempting a password login even though I have it configured to use an id_dsa file. I also got a hard crash duplicating, and then deleting an existing configuration.

      Went back to 0.9.x.

      "Fantastic"

Just set it up today ... WOW. This gives me the VPN I have always wanted. Setup required some solid SSH knowledge, but fortunately I work with people who are smarter than me. Only downside was that we had to populate a DNS list w/in the program instead of using the Host's DNS.

for anything basic this app is wonderful. I.E. ssh tunneling of specific addresses whether it be mail, irc , www, or another protocol. But for the average person who wants only to web browse similar to through a real VPN then so far this app isn't the right one for you.

      "Great Concept - slightly rickety"

      December 04, 2005   |   By srogers4_dotmac

      Version: AlmostVPN 0.9.5

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is a really really cool concept. The pref panel + widget is seriously easy to manage and convenient as heck. However, I had difficulty getting the widget to respond to clicks in a consistent way, and its visual feedback on buttons is not too hot. Also, the program seems to use CPU like crazy, which is not that great, considering how much CPU a tunnel created on the command line uses. If they can get the cooties out, this will be great. I give it 4 stars because the concept is so good that its usable even with some cooties. The documentation is pretty good (if perhaps a bit verbose), but strangely it doesn't cover the widget at all. I guess they think it is intuitively obvious.

      "Does exactly what I want"

      Version: AlmostVPN 0.9.3

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
AlmostVPN allows me to easily setup the various ssh tunnels that I used to have to setup manually. (Being able to start a tunnel using the Dashboard widget is great.) I really like how easily I can now get access to a remote mysql server which only allows localhost access.

I had a minor problem with passphrases and the developer has been very responsive and helpful. I can't wait to see what the Pro version will be like.

      "Still needs work"

      September 29, 2005   |   By 8675309_jane

      Version: AlmostVPN 0.9 RC 1

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I tried using this and although I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable in setting up VPNs and SSH tunnels, the interface of this app leaves something to be desired. For an app that provides a GUI intended to simplify setting up tunnels, it is still not straightforward enough. It's often too ambiguous as to which hostname it's asking for (e.g., the target server or the server with SSH installed that will tunnel to the target server?) and there aren't enough tooltips or adequate documentation to make up for the GUI's shortcomings. I was never able to figure out how to get a Windows share mounted through this app (even with the examples on the developer's site), which was the main reason I tried it in the first place.
