This freeware finds information about a Web host by entering an IP address or names, but it doesn't deliver all that the publisher promises. Alien IP claims to help reduce credit card fraud and filter access from specified countries, among other benefits, but these weren't options we found in the program. The interface is straightforward, but you'll likely head for the help file. Enter the IP address or name, and the host's geographic location is instantly indicated on an impressive world map. The program also displays the host, domain, IP address, and net range. Additionally, it shows the host's country and capital, with latitude and longitude coordinates for the capital. The zoom tools for the map have only two settings and didn't work very well in testing. Anyone wishing to find out host information or brush up on geography would enjoy Alien IP, but those looking for its promised functionality will be disappointed.

Alien IP will display the country and city of origin of web site visitors, e-mail senders, web hosts, and other IP owners on the world map. It will detect host computer country by IP or web address and resolve the domain name to IP address. Alien IP will help you analyze web log statistics, prevent password leakage, reduce credit-card frauds, determine the origin of e-mail senders, filter access from countries you do not want to do business with. Version 2.3 adds ability to use command line.
