"Not too sure"
Version: Alien Arena 2008 7.1
Pros
Gameplay was nice and simple, can get a good amount of people in one game, graphics not that bad for a free online FPS
Cons
The sound effects of the guns are a bit stock, I kept getting huge lag spikes no matter what server I went on and how low my ping was, starter weapon is annoying. Something more serious being I found a virus.
Summary
I dont mind this game, I have it on my laptop at the moment, I didnt mind the gameplay to be honest, it was simple but i wasnt expecting something complex becuase its only a freeware game, the graphics arent that bad, variety of guns that you get is ok but the starter weapon being a slow fireing single shot weapon is quite annoying. The sounds that this game used for gun shots could be improved, they seemed very stock, but it wasn't a major killer of the game experiance.
One thing that I did get every now and then were huge lag spikes even though my ping was good.
One of the bigger problems I experianced was that Avast found Adware in the installer, now i dont know if this is a false positive becuase I have scanned the installer with Adaware, spybot and Webroot antivirus on my main computer and they found nothing.
Overall the game wasn't bad, I do think that the virus it found was a false positive so I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. I'd recommend this to a more casual gamer even though there are people who go pro on this game, there are much better online FPS games to keep you interested. -
"Love/hate relationship"
Version: Alien Arena 2008 7.1
Pros
Among the best freeware on the net: smooth, simple, addictive, and home of a supporting community.
Cons
Average compared to retail shooters: Quake II level shooting, demanding graphics engine, dull stock maps, and a rabid, man-eating community against all who think AA is not the best game ever made.
Summary
Alien Arena. Some days I love you, some days I certainly don't.
When I love you, you're a cute little fragger game that runs just like Quake II. Tons of maps, a community full of helpful people, and a graphics engine that ups that Quake II to Quake II wuth better textures, better lighting, and more interesting things to look at. Oh, my, oh my, what a game!
When I don't love you, you're a boring, ugly fragger that runs like Quake II. Gameplay that was already done better by Unreal Tournament and Quake II itself, graphics that try to make an aging engine look pretty, and a community that will RIP YOUR HEAD OFF if you don't love AA2k8 as much as they did (if fact, the only developer of the game likes to debate with its detractors, including me - be careful on the forums). There are tons of maps and yet none of them have the shine of classic UT or Quake. The game is pretty picky about the hardware it will run on (no Intel stuff, nothing below Nvidia 4 level or ATI 9200 level), and it doesn't really look all that nice (the models are still pretty blocky, even with all the nice shadows and lighting effects). As a personal point of taste, I dislike the Quake II-based physics, which limit the movement of the player considerably compared to other FPS games.
I don't want to knock the game forever. It's amusing and diverting for a while. It's active enough online that you could get inrto a decent firefight most of the time. But it's also filled with points that, to me, are somewhat annoying. Perhaps it's just that I'm used to certain FPS games, but I'm not a huge fan of Alien Arena. It certainly isn't a bad game by any means (all the developing was done by one guy, which is amazing and a feat in itself). I'll try it now and again, but in the end, I say it's an average game as far as freeware goes. That's just my opinion; I know some people like it quite a bit, and it's free. What have you got to lose? -

"Kick A__ Free Full Free Game"
Version: Alien Arena 2008 7.1
Pros
What's so GOOD about this? Its FULL. It's Free. It has a community, it's FAST, looks good, and even runs great on my NON-Gamer system. It ROCKS. It's nto complicated, it RUNS... GREAT. It is SIMPLE to set up... ALL of the options are WELL placed and easy to access. The CHAT ROOM aqssigned to the game is filled with HELPFUL players.- THAT is what is great about it... Which is a lot mroe substantive than, saying "This sucks"
Cons
What's so BAD about it? Whats BAD about it are the little snot-nosed "self-appointed-Gaming Expert Reviewers" on CNET that are scragging this thing, having NO respect for someone's WORK, and who also have no computer skills to think of other than playing games (as opposed to creating them) and their basic life skill is spending the TRUST FUND money they got from mummy and daddy on $3,000 gaming computers and Lil HONDAS and stuff. THAT is what's bad about this. These people are not QUALIFIED to tell me how BAD this thing is, but I am utterly qualified to tell them where to go, EH?
