Even in this day of downloadable software, some programs still require a CD or DVD to stay in the disk drive whenever they're being used. Alcohol 52%, like other disc-emulation utilities, helps create or "mount" a virtual disc drive, allowing the software to be run from the hard drive instead. This helps speed up the process of reading the data on the CD, and allows a computer user to run several--in Alcohol's case, up to 31--of this type of disc-based application at the same time. In our tests, the program loaded the CD onto the hard drive quickly, and offered important features for older discs, such as rereading and the ability to skip bad sectors. The software supports most disc-image formats, including ISO, Nero, and CloneCD.
However, it is set apart by its ability to emulate copy-protection methods such as StarForce, SecuROM, and LaserLock, saving copy settings for audio, game, data, and other types of discs. That makes it possible to create virtual versions of copy-protected discs, which can otherwise be difficult to use in this way. Powerful and straightforward, Alcohol 52% is an excellent choice for computer users seeking emulation software.

Version: Alcohol 52% FE 1.9.5.4
Pros: I really wanted to find a freeware utility which is able to work with virtual drives. And I did it. The name of this excellent pick is Alcohol 52 % Free Edition. Although it can't work with all types of virtual disks the most popular are supported. Alcohol is an easy-to-use program because of it's great interface which is translated into my native russian. Maybe some users can feel the difference between Alcohol 120 % and 52 % but it is not about me. In my opinion, 52 % has all vital tools which are needed to work with virtual drives. Amazing freeware is my conclusion!
Cons: Nothing!

Version: Alcohol 52% FE 1.9.5.4
"It asks you to download the alcohol toolbar. on refusing it does not install"
Cons: it is not freeware per se as it asks you to install something which is not required.

Version: Alcohol 52% FE 1.9.5.4
Cons: Program requires that you install a browser toolbar. Won't let you install the program without the toolbar. If you accept the toolbar, a trojan virus is released within the rest of the installation process.

Version: Alcohol 52% FE 1.9.5.4
Cons: I downloaded and installed what looked to be a good program. I was suspicious when Alcohol required that I install the "Alcohol Toolbar" (???) After clicking OK, Norton threw an alert that Alcohol had tried to install "Trojan Adclicker", but Norton killed it. What a shame.
