Publisher's description
From Agnitum :Powerful combination of firewall and antispyware to address latest Internet security problems. Agnitum's Outpost PRO protects you from hackers, malware, ID thefts, unwelcome connections and other threats. The program "knows" virtually all data theft techniques in use today by trojans, spyware, worms, viruses and other malware. Use of these data theft techniques can be simulated with so-called "leak tests" - special utilities that test how well personal firewalls prevent data leakage. Currently 18 leak tests are available, and several new ones are in development.

Version: Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0.1025.7828
Pros: gives most control and protection. I love how I can set it and not have anything pop up unless I want it to.
Cons: New releases sometimes have kinks. But eventually they get worked out and when they do the firewall is awesome.

"A Firewall That Actually Works!"
Pros: Used to use ZoneAlarm, but looked for something new after reading all the reviews here about the new version being so bloated.
Tried Comodo, but don't believe the hype, it can be bypassed by apps. Also, it would often start with the settings turned off, and sometimes it would even switch to "allow all" by itself. Either a bug, or taken over by other app, didn't work.
Outpost is amazing. It's not free but you get what you pay for. It really DOES protect itself from being modified by other apps (this is important), and has many awesome features. Gives just as much if not more detail than Comodo, and can let you control almost any aspect.
Applications can be configured with pre-defined rules, but then you can go in and change any aspect. You can also build the rules as needed - every time an application requests a network resource you can choose "Custom" and allow it, and build the permissions for the application over time. Also gives you the option to easily "Allow Once" or "Block Once" connections.
For the more casual user, you can "automatically" accept pre-defined rules for common applications (actually the default option) and then it cuts down the number of warnings significantly if that's what you're looking for. If you're looking for more control, make sure the "automatic" option is turned off. Either way, would suggest to make sure the setting for Outpost to protect itself is turned on.
It can also (depending on how you configure it): tell you when applications use/inject the memory of other applications, and when applications make critical changes to the registry (for example to start themselves at startup - common for bloatware/spyware/etc). You can block or "fix" such actions (but remember there are legitimate use cases too - drivers/etc). In general, use common sense. For the above average user.
The spyware scanner is also a nice plus.
This firewall works. Period. For the above average user it gives you great control and options - play around with the settings.
Cons: Interface not the most intuitive for novice users, but if you want something that works spend some time and look around - all the options are there (many not in the default view - explore the menu options). Really, what should be important for a firewall is how well it works, not how nice the user buttons/etc look.
An improvement could be to track critical registry changes and be able to undo them at a later date. You can undo critical registry changes when they happen, but this is the one feature that haven't found a way to go back to and fix later if you change your mind. Probably not easy to implement since being able to undo artibrary registry changes can cause unforseen problems, but hey it would be nice.

"Tired of bloatd AV suites that slow your computer down and just don't work?"
Pros: Any fat bloated software suite that is slowing your computer down can't be doing a very good job protecting your computer I don't care how many features it has. Electronic data protection was the only feature that kept me from dumping these overrated AV solutions. NOW Agnitum has private data protection - AND this firewall is so advanced that professionals can use this firewall on 64 bit systems and I am sure the Vista version will be out soon if not already.
If you are a newbie - try the trial Pro version and look at the user guides for the free version that are written for newbies. This will give you the insight you need to simplify the installation and configuration of the firewall. You would have to buy a hardware firewall gateway device to get a better firewall with similar features - but if you don't know Linux you would have to pay for expensive services to come close to matching Agnitum's capabilities.
Don't let the pop ups confuse you when you install; just click "block once" untill you notice you can't do anything and then try again and click "allow once" - If this gives the process functionality then you know you did right and next time you can permenantly allow that process within parameters that are explained clearly in the beginner's guide.
If you don't know the name of the process you are being quizzed about just Google it or click allow once and chances are you'll be fine. If you are doing nothing and you get a popup; chances are this is a suspicious process that could be trying to take over your computer! I feel anyone can get the hang of it.
If you like to use your computer for buying things online and giving out personal information(usually on SSL connection), you have no choice but to get serious about personal computing security. Just read the papers if you don't believe me.
Cons: No cons yet. For those that have used ZoneAlarm, the pop up learning phase is similiar. If that was too irritating for you; just remember - even Zonealarm can be defeated by the new cracker tech that is lurking out on the web and maybe in your computer right now. Perhaps you should wipe your hard drive and reinstall the operating system and just forget about full network functionality and keep on using insecure software. Get a geek buddy to help you install the firewall if it is daunting for you. Kaspersky may be your least alternative but you will pay more for it also.
I am using this on my laptop with Windows XP Pro 64bit Edition and it is working swimmingly. If I run into any problems I will ad a comment to this review or do another review. Happy secure computing!

"WARNING:This software is EXTREMELY BAD"
Pros: it can really block hacking attempts.
Cons: It takes about 50% or more processor usage
when i called support they told me this was because of kaspersky anti virus installed on my pc.
they sent me a patch and some steps to follow to repair this however they destroyed my kaspersky anti virus completely and the problem is still there
i tried and un-installed both outpost and kaspersky then installed outpost alone and still high cpu usage that sometimes my mouse stop responding for a while and maybe i start to see blue screens a lot.
