This firewall offers the rare combination of a powerful feature set and an easy-to-use design. During installation, the program finds all network-enabled applications on your PC and lets you set security policies for each. This eliminates the endless pop-up boxes you get with many firewalls, wherein you must allow or disallow certain processes from accessing your machine. We appreciate the ability to fine-tune all aspects of network usage using rules, and the easy-to-analyze logs are another big plus. In our tests, the firewall demonstrated good performance, successfully blocking several Trojan horses from our PC. Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro also enhances your Web-surfing experience by blocking pop-ups, Flash ads, and banners, as well as potentially dangerous elements on pages. Persons looking for a robust yet low-maintenance firewall should take a close look at Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro.

Publisher's description

From Agnitum :

Powerful combination of firewall and antispyware to address latest Internet security problems. Agnitum's Outpost PRO protects you from hackers, malware, ID thefts, unwelcome connections. It starts protecting the host system immediately after it's installed. The program detects and blocks hacker attacks, guards the privacy of data stored on your computer, monitors network activity of your system and applications, provides clean web surfing and prevents malware from activating on your computer. Outpost places your computer in a stealth mode, making it invisible to hackers so that they cannot verify your machine is present on a network and subsequently launch attacks on it. In addition, the program allows the removal of annoying pop-up windows and prevents websites from tracking where you surf. To ensure that you have the latest protection in place, Outpost Firewall PRO is regularly updated via its dedicated update service.

    "Better and best"

    by Professor_NEGATIVE on January 12, 2006

Pros: It's the best of the entire lot. Zone alarm used to be good but the law of diminishing marginal returns has reduced its capabilties.

    Cons: Memory hog though.

    "Decent Firewall"

by CNETNOW on January 10, 2006

Pros: 1. I like the additional "anti-hacking" features.

    2. I like the Plugin ability, so you can add more features.

Cons: 1. Its one of those "try to do everything" programs, that ends up being so-so or "jack of all trades and master of none".

    2. All the "tweaks", "bells and whistles", "extra plugins", etc... can make it annoying to configure or worse cause you a major headache.

A Firewall in the same "class" as Outpost that does Outbound protection and has "anti-spyware/hacking" feature is Jetico Firewall. The great thing about Jetico is that its truly free and very powerful.

I would advocate to try Jetico first to see if it suits your need, but if it does not or you need some more "extras" than perhaps you should give Outpost a try too.

    "Great program!"

by bzseal on January 18, 2006

Pros: I like the interface and it's very easy to navigate. Different policies on how to manage outbound and inbound traffic. Most of the time I just put it in Block Most (the Rules Wizard was fun at first but it started to annoy me so I disabled that). Gives the user absolute control over the firewall. Also has built in spyware scanner that gets updated frequently. This firewall works perfectly with Nod32.

Cons: A little bit of a "RAM" hog especially during the first 30 minutes or so. But it stabilizes at around 7 MB.

"The best out the box configuration"

by popsrobs on January 7, 2006

Pros: Outpost is the only firewall that I have used that totally blocks all ports and configures everything straight off with usefull tips for the not so advance user and fairly comprehensive help available. This firewall is strongly recommended for anyone who is not an advance user, that wants a firewall that's properly configured straight off with enough help to quickly increase one's understanding.

Cons: A renewable subcription. If you are a user that is advance enough to configure a firewall you can get the same level of protection from Jetico personal firewall, but that is definately for advance users, who would prefer to have a (SPI) firewall that's just a firewall and it's free. For anyone who's not advance enough to use Jetico to it's atmost I highly recommend Outpost.

"Looks nice, but does not work"

by Maymee on December 17, 2005

    Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: It does not allow me to browse. I have seen another review that complained about the same happening. I tried with success ZA, Kerio and Sygate, but this programme blocks Opera and IE from receiving data, even though they are both marked as trusted. Perhaps something easy to fix, but one expects a firewall to work from the start and without too much of a hassle.
