"file labeled XI installs as 10; Tom's Guide workaround"

October 19, 2014  |  By kmarin

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.09

Pros

By going to the Adobe website, you do get an advance warning of the indefensibly useless & cynical terms of service for XI; we promise nothing, & ha ha, you can't catch me. Per usual, you must agree to it, or you can't download. The file is called "Reader_11_0_en', but as noted above, it reinstalls Reader 10. Very kind, I'm sure...

Cons

...but I did already have 10. If you just need some version of Reader, that's great of course; just remember to decide if you want the Norton which is on "yes" by default. Trying to use Norton with your current virus catcher might scramble things, so don't accept it if you don't need it.
By going to another website (Tom's Guide, which may/not be famous; new to me), I was able to download a different file: install_reader11_en_ltr5x64d_awc_aih.exe. I had to download it twice, as it only partially completed installation the first time. I did successfully install it. (This previously happened w Flash as well; I have to remember to make a copy of the file before clicking on it to install, so I DON'T have to download it again. While there must a number of other sources, this site appears to have downloaded only what I asked for without insisting on pushing other stuff on me.

Summary

Go to Tom's Guide (at http://www.tomsguide.com/us/download/Reader-Adobe,0301-5623.html) to get a workaround vs. Adobe's providing Reader 10 at its XI download link. There's an Apple & a Windows version; type your desired version in the search box if it's not apparent. (Sorry- kind of gruesome to think of either company as a parent; 'tis the season though.)
NOTE: Having just succeeded in downloading XI, I haven't test-driven it yet. I 3-starred only so not to be prejudicial in either direction; the site would not allow a 0-star posting.

"Can't download it have to install it from web site!"

June 14, 2014  |  By Grandbubbaa

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.07

Pros

None. Your review is lazy.

Cons

Slow and bulky download.
Unable to download file and install on multiple machines - they offer an option if you are an IT manager or OEM.. what a pain.
Once they get you by the balls they can squeeze as hard as they like i.e. everyone uses pdf

Summary

After reading Adobe threads about other products and the total lack of support.. (for paying customers) I am amused to see so many that have had it with Adobe and its pdf reader.
If I had Adobe shares I would be selling them now.
Adobe have lost the plot.
I once recommend Adobe to the Department of Justice ... in my capacity of "expert" I wouldn't recommend them now.
CNET don't be lazy with reviews.

"Crashes Constantly"

April 05, 2014  |  By ChuckCa

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.06

Pros

nada. can hardly use it right now.

Cons

I use the pro version, previous version was great. This release is incredibly unstable. It crashes constantly! I search documents frequently, which will cause it to crash at least 50% of the time. Support from Adobe is nonexistent.
Stay away.

"Ridiculous Product"

March 03, 2014  |  By OkavangoKat

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.06

Pros

Adobe worked fine for me until the update to XI came along that I never asked for.

Cons

FORGET support for this product, you will get none. Users in the forum are rude and not very bright. I thought I was speaking to a technician and asked that they give me a call and basically got told off. They said what do you want from a free product??

Summary

Look ADOBE - f you're going to provide a product, you should provide some sort of support plain and simple. The way I was treated makes me NEVER want to buy an Adobe product, EVER. There isn't even a way to e-mail you with issues. That's just ridiculous. Also, how about moderating the way your "super users" are talking to people in your forums??

"Only got half a star, since it is the minimum."

February 26, 2014  |  By GameZombie

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.06

Pros

Regular contact with my mom.

Cons

All the contact ever is about is yet another message, error, update, failure or crash of Adobe Reader. Would have preferred to talk about something useful.

Using this software is the same thing as using a helicopter to go from your living room to your toilet. Yes, eventually you will get there but on your way you have basically destroyed your hallway and neutered your pet.

Summary

Don't install unless you love to have something nagging at you, every computer session you will have until eternity.

"Barely usable"

February 19, 2014  |  By corsair9

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.06

Pros

Not really any

Cons

I have to mirror *stephenlikesto* comments above. Adobe keeps running their product down with each upgrade. I am working with a 580 page book published in 1884. I worked for a week from the previous 'Reader', I guess Reader X. After upgrading to Win 7 I downloaded Reader XI. Before it took perhaps half a minute for the pdf file to load and then I could scroll all the way through it to the page I wanted. With the new Reader it takes minutes for the file to load, and then as I scroll through it I have to wait again for that page to load - perhaps a few more minutes. Then if I swipe a paragraph to copy and save in a word processor doc it pastes as a column, one word per line: disasterous! I have to do a screen capture and OCR the image - a poor use of my time. Originally the pages of this old book appeared yellowish as one would expect; with Reader XI it is black and white and reads poorly, the text faint at points.

Summary

I have asked my tech to find a substitute for Adobe Reader XI; also, when I tried to download Adobe Flash Player for my Win 7 it fails. It would seem Adobe is anxious to become incidental and fade from existence in the digital age.
Good riddance, I guess.

"Sorry I upgraded my Mac Adobe Acrobat X to XI."

February 04, 2014  |  By Zoonotics

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.06

Pros

Like version X for my needs - making pdf files from scanner, web site, word documents.

Cons

UNBELIEVABLY PRIMITIVE text, notes, etc graphics. I get angrier by the minute trying to add anything to a page or change what I have already added. Is this the Adobe that makes Photoshop? Trying to add text or notes, etc. reminds me of Windows 3.0 software.

Summary

I have been using Acrobat Pro since Windows version 4.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY if you want to do any changes to a page.

Updated on Feb 4, 2014

MY comments are for Adobe Acrobat Pro XI for Mac, NOT the reader.

"Has become unusable"

January 18, 2014  |  By stephenlikesto

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.06

Pros

None anymore

Cons

I only ever used this to read documents and copy selected texts or URLs and this functionality has been disabled.

Adobe products are constantly updating themselves.

Summary

Time to uninstall Adobe reader and a reminder to never use Adobe products where there is an alternative.

Get yourself hated Adobe and for what? What possible benefit can you get from disabling the only thing that made it worth downloading this product for?

"Horrible I Can't Use It"

December 22, 2013  |  By Sampson5115

 |  Version: Adobe Reader XI 11.0.04

Pros

Nothing the thing doesn't work anymore.

Cons

I received an update and it won't work anymore.
Customer service refuses to call me.
They send me an e-mail every 3-4 days with a solution that does not work.

Summary

My reader was working great. Then one day get a notice it's been updated. I haven't been able to open it since. I'm not the only one. I've seen many with this problem. I'm computer savvy and I have tried every fix out there, plus the ones they have sent me that do not work. I can't use it anymore. I have to switch to a new pdf reader.
