One of the first applications built to find and remove adware and spyware, Ad-Aware's excellent reputation is well-justified. While the 2007 edition is still free, it does have some new features that may make you reconsider the height of the pedestal it sits on.

First off, the app's updater is now permanently on, running in your system's background. The irony of Ad-Aware running potential spyware is not lost on us. The interface has also been completely overhauled, and it's a bit more confusing. There are six tabs in the nav bar. Status and Scan initiate adware scans, and finish with a line-item list so you can select which components to remove and create a system restore point. The context menu offers some information about suspected adware, though it's light on details.

Other navbar buttons include Ad-Watch, offering real-time defenses but only in the paid version. Plug-ins are disabled in the free version, but the Tools and Plug-ins tab hosts TrackSweep, the new browsing tracks cleaner. Smoothly integrated into the app, it wipes the cache, cookies, and history, and other breadcrumbs left by major browsers. We couldn't help but notice, though, that the Web Update tab, which controls definition file and software updates, ran far more sluggishly than in previous editions, and sometimes even crashed the program.

The Settings tab provides access to auto-scans, browsers, scanning, the interface, and log files. The app does an excellent job of removing most malware components, although rescanning is necessary for a seriously infected machine. The freeware restrictions are mildly irritating, but they're nothing compared to some of the serious stability and background processes in the 2007 version. However, it is a fully functional adware remover, and it continues to do that well. With some hesitation, we recommend Ad-Aware 2007 as part of your arsenal.

"Company with Integrity"

 |  Version: Ad-Aware 2007 7.0.2.1

Pros

I had problems getting the Plus version to work after my system crashed and I had to reinstall XP from scratch. However I contacted Customer Support and told them that I would like a refund and they took a few days to respond but agreed graciously.

"Well-written, fast execution, and frequent free updates."

September 25, 2007  |  By tuxedo1091

 |  Version: Ad-Aware 2007 7.0.2.1

Pros

Ad-Aware has always been reliable ferreting out spyware, malware, tracking software etc. I have used it for eight (8) years and keep it updated with their free engine updates and downloads. Huzzah!

My recommendation to you, the reader of this, is to purchase the PRO Version after you've used the SE Personal Version for a while. It's more robust with many more features.

"Lavasoft doesn't answer tech support help"

September 23, 2007  |  By JaxJagsfan

 |  Version: Ad-Aware 2007 7.0.2.1

Cons

I have been posting about an error I've been getting during my scans. The error reads like this:

Service error: 6100 has ocurred.

Description: Lost connection with Ad-Aware service.

Terminating gracefully...

If you would look on the Lavasoft.com support forum you will see a lot of posts complaining about Lavasoft refusing to resolve this problem. If they don't correct this problem, I will soon quit using Ad-Aware 2007.

"Buggy and unreliable"

September 23, 2007  |  By jettjon

 |  Version: Ad-Aware 2007 7.0.2.1

Pros

After using the free version of Ad-Aware for many years with good results (in conjunction with other anti-spyware apps such as SpyBot and SuperAntiSpyware), I was interested in seeing what the "new" 2007 freeware version could do. Possibly, it picks up more spyware than older versions. However, that is about the ONLY good thing I can say about this product. Also, it is FREE, which is the only reason that I gave the product two stars instead of one. "You get what you pay for?" Maybe. But there are many more capable free products on the market that do a better job at spyware mitigation.

Cons

After using this product extensively both on Windows 2000 and Windows XP, I can report with confidence that it is substandard when compared to previous versions. In fact, I plan to uninstall the 2007 version and reinstall an older version. The problems are MANY and no doubt unnecessary.

First, the engine requires a connection to the Internet to work. MANY things will cause this connection to fail, including running applications or surfing the net while the scan is in progress.

Second, scan time has GREATLY increased. On both W2K and XP on various size HDD, scan times have ballooned from about 10-15 minutes to 1 hour+.

Third, the cleaning process is MADDENING. Once it identifies threats, you must click on what you want removed and then click on a specific command to clean. It is completly COUNTERINTUTIVE. I have been using 2007 for many months and I STILL click on the wrong key all the time, causing my 1-hour-plus scan to be discarded! Worse, there is no way to go back and tell it to clean without running the entire scan again! This feature alone RUINS any usefullness that this product has.

Finally, the upgrade process is a NIGHTMARE. First of all, at least 50% of the time, the upgrade process cannot connect to the Internet. And when it does, it prompts the user at least 4 times with various screens whose only purpose is to ANNOY them. Example: Download now, y/n?; downloading now, "OK"; "download complete, OK?"; "Installing now, OK?"; "install complete." Those aren't the actual screens, but you get the idea. Complete waste of time and forces the user to "babysit" the upgrade process.

Bottom line: Pass on this piece of trash.
