CNET Editors' review
Freeware's cool, but some programs are worth paying for. Antivirus, graphics, and accounting tools justify their cost if they outperform their free competitors, but for our money, nothing beats top-quality backup software. And for our system, nothing provides the level of security, total restoration capability, and confidence like Acronis True Image Home Edition. Acronis automatically creates full, incremental, and custom backups; remote backups; and even optional Internet-based backups with file synchronization features. It also includes a variety of tools for cleaning disks and shredding files, creating bootable media and secure partitions, backing up settings, adding and cloning disks, sandboxing unsafe operations, and other useful tasks. And, while Acronis True Image Home Edition creates thorough, top-quality backups, it does the job with amazing speed, even when working in the background.
Acronis True Image's user interface has an Office-style ribbon toolbar with tabs labeled Get started, Backup and Recovery, Synchronization, and Tools and Utilities. Acronis can create several types of backups using different levels of compression, different priority for system resources, and even different destinations, such as removable drives. Incremental backups create one main backup and only update it with changes to your system. Based on hard-earned experience, we always create new full backups that we store on a dedicated hard drive, plus a full copy on a removable drive. It's not overkill: Many times we've used Acronis backups to restore entire systems after unrecoverable disasters, even to completely new drives on third systems with Acronis installed. The Home Edition will also restore systems backed up with various free versions of Acronis, such as True Image WD. Help and support are plentiful.
Let's be clear: A proper external hard drive for storing your backups is far more important than which backup solution you choose, as long as you make use of it. We've compared Acronis to premium competitors like Ghost as well as excellent free tools such as Easus and, yes, Windows Backup, which you've already got (and use, we hope). Each does a good job and is much better than nothing. But experience is the best teacher. Based on our real-world experience, we trust Acronis True Image Home Edition.
Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of Acronis True Image Home 2012. The trial version is limited to 30 days.

"Very poor interface; slow"
Version: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Pros
Will successfully back up when not "corrupt". Multiple choices for back-up.
Cons
Right out of the gate I had to reach tech support that said there was a known issue regarding corrupt files, a very frequent occurrence (required a fresh boot every time). A fix was on the way, I was told. I then began to receive annoying automated emails asking if the issue was "resolved" and which stated I must reply within 4 days or the case would be considered closed. After several months with no fix, I tried to contact tech support again, but because I was outside the support window my only option was pay more for a product that never worked correctly in the first place! I tried other routes but to no avail. This is a poor product with irresponsible company support.
Summary
I would not recommend this product.

"Poor UI, image restore fails on large GPT-type disks."
Version: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Pros
Good backup performance, ability to restore files & folders from image backup.
Cons
Redesigned interface with version 2011. It is incredibly bad: cumbersome, slow, non-intuitive, etc. If you have large disks you must purchase the separate Plus Pack. Image Restore still broken for large GPT-type disks.
Summary
Support is good and easy to reach. So what? It's the product that's bad (or become so the past few versions). I am inundated with Acronis survey forms -- only for their support group. Wake up Acronis!! Your support group isn't the problem -- the PRODUCT is the problem.
I have used Acronis for years, and stuck with it version after version, hoping it will improve. I have spent countless hours on the phone and chat with their support, working on various problems. The 2011/2012 UI redesign was the last straw. I am giving up and switching to another product ASAP. I strongly advise everyone to thoroughly investigate the alternatives. I would say the 2011 redesign is the Microsoft Vista of backup programs, but it's much worse than that. -
"Disappointing"
Version: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Pros
Does work however on a single core machine v9.0 runs better, not so much the backing up just the starting of the GUI arghhhhhhh
Cons
Poorly designed,GUI startup takes too long, too much focus put into eye candy
Summary
Would recommend using on multi core only with a min 2gb ram,for single core better off with earlier versions or switch to more functional software with less emphasis on looking good & more on performance, for whatever reason my main gripe is the GUI load time, everything else about v11.0 is ok once you figure out where everything is..lol..

"Gone downhill"
Version: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Pros
It will back up if it is working.
Cons
Horrible user interface
Stops working for no reason
Validation abendsSummary
I used Acronis True Image for many years. When we got new PCs, we bought 3 copies of True Image Home 2011. Horrible interface! They don't understand the KISS motto. During the initial backup, it took more than 30 hours to validate my backup. Finally they issue a fix. But now, on scheduled backup the last steps abend. Supposedly, removing the validation step on the scheduler will fix the problem. On top of that, I ran True Image only once on my laptop. Now, it won't start. I click on the icon, the actual program, etc...nothing happens. Since I got the software in May (I know, every PC should be on a backup schedule), tech support won't help me. So not happy with them at all.

"Great program!"
Version: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Pros
Saved me after a computer crash.
Cons
None that I can think of.
-
"Confusing interface. Features hard to determine."
Version: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Pros
I guess it is backing up since it filled an entire disk.
Cons
Very confusing interface. Fills disk but you have to take action to "consolidate" backups to make more room estimated at eight hours on my PC. Really? Software not smart enough to do this for me?
Summary
No thanks. Another backup program that can't get it right.
I found the settings to consolidate automatically so giving it another try.

"Used to be a good product - NOT ANY MORE!"
Version: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Pros
NONE. NONE. NONE.
Cons
A restore is a nightmare if you have several partitions.
Summary
Older versions used to be very straight forward when doing to restore from the rescue disk - Pick the image, pick the destination, a couple more clicks and you were on your way. With this version, when restore from the rescue disk - You pick the image, but now you have to specify not only the destination for EACH partition in your image (eg. primary, diagnostic, & MBR), but size, how much free space before & after, etc.

"Easy to install"
Version: Acronis True Image Home 2011
Pros
It was easy for this novice to install, no problems.
It backs up PC on a schedule.Cons
This novice is overwhelmed by the options.
Summary
I would have appreciated more documentation, but I'm probably not taking the time to access the information that I need. I was overwhelmed and confused by the choices, but I'm certain others who are more tech savvy had no problem.
