"But does it WORK?"

January 24, 2006  |  By macdad614

 |  Version: AbsoluteDeNoiser 1.2.0c

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
NO, it did not. I was able to open a 350 KB photo (jpg) after I selected 'About Absolute Denoiser" and, by the way, found that it is Version 10.2.

Whenever I moved the cursor to one of the side windows, the image disappeared in the main window. Moving the cursor back to the main window resulted in the image returning, but it was at the same position as when it first opened, although I had zoomed in and moved to the center of the image.

Clicking on the icon for saving the work (I did move all three sliders on the side windows, expecting to have effected some change in the photo) resulted in the error message "Error: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError" and on the title bar of the window was Done: 5%.

So I quit the app. . .

READ FURTHER. . .

Upon re-launch, the photo selected appeared in the main window, and various photo parts also appeared in the adjustment windows. Clicking on one of the sliders caused the Done: to show various per cents as it was working.

The image looked smoother, so I thought I should save it. It was a copy of the original, a 300 KB photo. This go 'round resulted in a different error message: "Error: only PNG are possible."

What this app needs is
â?¢ the ability to use Mac OSX open dialog,
â?¢ menu choices,
â?¢ explanations of what each slider should do at its optimum,
â?¢ ability to work with photos other than PNG (I'll see what happens when I convert a jpg to a PNG and work with that), and
â?¢ a reasonable way to save a photo, even if it is to save it in a different format.

I have not given up on it entirely. I cannot work on PNG files using Graphic Converter - at least not while this browser is open. After I am off-line I will be able to determine whether I can convert a JPG to a PNG.

This has been around awhile, but this is the first time I have tried to use it (because I have grown tired of manually repairing digital photo problems). It needs some work to be fully functional.

"Very unintuitive"

January 22, 2006  |  By graffix

 |  Version: AbsoluteDeNoiser 1.2.0c

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I really tried to like this app, but it's very non-intuitive for somebody that doesn't really have any idea how to use it. I read the documentation included, and even it didn't really help.

When you launch this app, you're presented with an Open File dialog... however, that's the only one you'll ever see, unless you relaunch the app. So, that means that between each photo (if you're doing a batch), you'll have to quit the app, then restart it. A simple 'Open File' button somewhere in the menubar would be nice.

Second big problem... this application does not support TIFF files, a huge dealbreaker for many people that would want to use it to denoise high-quality photos. So, since it didn't support TIFF, I tried converting the photo to PNG then opening it with ADN... no dice: "Out of Memory" error on a 6.2Mp image. So, throwing caution into the wind, I converted my picture to JPEG, which ADN finally recognized and opened.

So, now you're shown your photo in the main window, and that's it... nothing in the three side windows that are supposed to allow you to find edges, adjust the surfaces, and play with the Texture of the noise. So, I click on the photo, and voila! a piece of the photo shows up in each box now.

You then have a series of sliders next to each of the aforementioned side windows, only they're unlabeled, so you just have to play around with them, then you notice that, after a brief delay as a calculation is done on the part of the photo you have selected, that these sliders adjust the values of the different adjustment fields.

So, I play around with those until I get a feel of what they're doing, and then click the button that is supposed to apply the adjustments to the whole photo... only nothing happens. I tried clicking the button several times, and still, nothing happened.

So, I clicked the 'Save' button, and received an error stating: "The image you wanted to save was not calculated"... but... but... I clicked the 'calculate' button a half-dozen times.

So, in frustration, I clicked the 'Quit' button (which doesn't even warn you before it closes the app), and dropped it into the trashcan.

Looks like I'll be sticking with Noise Ninja, which is a commercial app, but at least it works in an intuitive fashion.

"No problems at all.."

October 21, 2004  |  By bmonno

 |  Version: AbsoluteDeNoiser 1.2.0a

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
with the installation on 10.3.5. I followed the instructions used the runMacOsX.command and the program worked.
The program is a little slow but perhaps this is a problem of OS X.

I'm a Mac user since 1988 and it was hard to me learning something about the unix part of Os X. And I'm happy that more and more Unix software ist coming to the Mac.
I'll never would give a software only one '*' if I can't read.

"Ok, I found the sliders"

So, after trying again I found the sliders on the left side of the adjustment sample images. All this confusion could be prevented by better documentation - and the aforementioned application GUI.

"Pretty good"

March 09, 2004  |  By Adreitz

 |  Version: AbsoluteDeNoiser 1.0.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Positive: Works well to eliminate luminance noise and reduce chroma noise without blurring major features of the image. Tweakable to get desired results.

Negative: <b>Slow as a dog!</b> Nonstandard interface makes working with images difficult at times (especially opening/saving). Chroma noise is affected much less than luminance noise. Loses some shadow detail. Can produce some posterization artifacts in gradients (faces).

All in all, it eliminates noise better than other Mac products I'm familiar with, though I'd like to see a Mac port of PictureCode Noise Ninja (reviewed at<http://www.michaelalmond.com/Articles/noise.htm>).
