"Very Pleased!"
Version: AVS Video Editor 6.1.2.211
Pros
LOTS of features in this! Nice transitions, effects, add additional video/audio tracks, etc. Individual tracks lock to keep them in place once you're satisfied. Feature rich title editor. The program is well laid out, similar to Pinnacle or PwrDir.
Cons
I have nothing to put here. I ran a couple of edit sessions w/about 3 minutes total video each. The program worked flawlessly on both on my Dell Vostro 200.
Summary
Great software. I recommend it!

"Better than most, but bad interface"
Version: AVS Video Editor 6.1.2.211
Pros
1. Has some of the best text overlay options you'll find anywhere at any price. Many presets with and without animation, plus you can create your own. Similar to, what Cyberlink Power Director 10 ineptly offers.
2. Video overlays and effects, transitions, are many and useful, easily configured. Same, for trimming. Same for sound mixing. As many layers as you want, you can always add a line.
3. Markers are labelled 'Chapters'. So you can be precise.
4. Good sound effects, though the description is jargon-y, so you have to guess.
5. Online help is decent, gets the point across most of the time.
6. They are responsive to email.
7. AVS' Video Converter is great. It optionally joins videos allows video and audio editing/effects, batch conversion, resizing. You can READ the HD fine text in Preview Mode! Now if only it allowed video overlay, the Editor's cute text options; if it allowed added audio tracks, it would be perfect. No resolution restrictions!Cons
1. Clunky interface with icons that are WAY too large, even though you can zoom them smaller or turn them into 'details'. The left side (frame) of the screen (left of the Preview Window Pane) will not shrink enough.
2. Same for the timeline, which is clunky due to a weird 'zoom' that always truncates at the ends, so you never quite reach the ends.
3. If you cut the length of a video clip after adding audio, they clip the audio, too. Same if you move a clip. That's a bad design. They shouldn't 'marry' the audio and video by default.
2. Hence, you cannot get a large-enough Preview Window, to easily read text in an HD video you recorded fullscreen on your flat panel (usu. 1280 x 1024) monitor. So the text looks Greeked. WORKAROUND: their vers. 3.5 doesn't have that problem.
3. Their video codecs are out of date, even if you have later ones on your machine, although the Xvid for MPEG-4 works well enough.
4. You're forced to choose 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio. REALLY BAD IDEA.Summary
GIST:
All cons considered, this is a better product than anything else I've seen 'out there', including the pricey Camtasia and some of the other heavy-hitters (which are as buggy as they are pricey).
So, just bought my second AVS4YOU lifetime ALL PRODUCT license. I've made about 400 HD instructional videos with this software. You can see the output in my 'brainouty' channel on Youtube. Been making videos since version 3.5, which is still better for HD than their later versions. They had a version 4.0 or 4.1back in summer 2008, which was perfect. Then, after that, it went downhill.
The cons date from the versions post 4.1. The good news is, you can buy their latest version and still roll back to 3.5. About $60 buys all their programs, among which Video Converter is best.
If they would make a floating Preview Window or at least, one which would go fullscreen so you can see a desktop recording you made of TEXT -- or, at least not force you to choose between 16:9 and 4:3, as if the only videos people made were for TVs -- or, make the rest of the interface shrink so you could resize the Preview Window to be large enough -- this program would be nearly perfect. Oh: and they need to allow for updated codecs, when you have them on your machine.
Meanwhile, I'm still able to do true HD videos using their old (and buggy) 3.5 version, at the rate of three or so a week. Let me know if you have questions; contact me in Youtube as 'brainouty'. I want to help AVS4YOU 'get the message' about what they need to do to improve their Editor. -

"Wreaked Havoc On My Computer"
Version: AVS Video Editor 6.1.2.211
Pros
Lots of applications for a very good price.
Cons
After I paid for and downloaded this suite, my computer started to go slightly crazy. Blue screens that I had NEVER seen before on this computer started to appear. My DVD burner was not recognized by the software and shortly not by ANY of my burning applications. The editor simply crashed more often than anything I can remember. It is a very attractive concept badly executed. Also, the previous comment about the license is spot on. I wanted to load it on our laptop for quick edits when we travel. No-go without another license. Sorry to say, it but this software is a joke.
Summary
Don't even bother to try it. Besides, you'll get a watermarked products that is useless. I gave up on the software, uninstalled it and selected an earlier restore point, restored/rebooted my computer and got, got my refund. Still looking for a decent affordable editor.

"Happy with this editor"
Version: AVS Video Editor 6.1.2.211
Pros
I got a great deal and bought the entire group of AVS programs for a huge discount. at first I found it hard to use until I found their video tutorial on their website, now it's a snap. I use the editor and the video converter a lot. I haven't used any of the other programs yet but for the price I had to buy them.
Cons
Haven't found any.
Summary
I would recommended this video editor. it has a lot more bells and whistles then Windows Movie Maker.

"Easy to use, but..."
Version: AVS Video Editor 6.1.2.211
Pros
With help from the free videos on the AVS4You web site, I (a video noob) was able to crop a video, add a title and fade out in about 15 minutes. Impressively easy to use. I was about to buy the software when the license caught my attention. See below.
Cons
The license agreement has got to be one of the WORST I've ever seen on a software product. This software is licensed to the computer, not to the user. I have two computers I routinely work on: desktop and laptop. I'm the only person using these two computers. This license would require me to buy TWO copies, or restrict my usage to either the laptop OR the desktop. PLUS! That's not all. If you change your computer, say your motherboard gets fried during a storm, and you have to buy a new one, guess what. You have to buy YET ANOTHER copy of the software. No thanks. What a turn-off. I'll find another video editor to use, thankyouverymuch.
Summary
If the company had a different software license, I would be much more interested in using this editor. However, as written, there's no way I would give this company my money. It's a greedy, predatory way to treat customers, and I'll spend my money elsewhere.

"Best Video Editor for the Price! :)"
Version: AVS Video Editor 6.1.2.211
Pros
- Very intuitive user interface
- Supports many types of video formats and frame rates
- Excellent clip editing capabilities
- Good special effects
- Multichannel audio and video feeds
- Takes excellent advantage of dual monitors for editing!
- Easy drag and drop abilities!Cons
- Need to edit very complex project (like a two hour indie film) through a series of several 10 minute smaller projects, then join together into one large project for a final simple edit.
- No abilities to select a group of clips to move from one part of the timeline to another
- No abilities to "copy" properties set on one clip (color, size, etc.) and apply to other clips so you don't have to repeat color schemes over and over, for example.Summary
I've used AVS Video Editor since May of 2010 and truly love it! If you're looking for an editor to help you get the job done for a fraction of the cost, this is it!
I was involved with a production of an indie feature on a "zero" budget. We did filming and edited about a 90 minute film using AVS Video Editor. Why didn't I use Sony Vegas? Didn't have the money!
The truth is you get what you pay for. AVS Video Editor isn't free, but what little you pay goes a long way. If you're the casual indie filmmaker and don't want to go broke or just want to try something inexpensive, yet useful, AVS Video Editor is for you.
One day I'm sure I'll pay serious money for Adobe After Effects or Sony Vegas Pro. Until then, I'll continue to use AVS Video Editor and just have fun learning about video editing in an intuitive app. :) -
