AVG's most popular product is its free antivirus, but the company also makes two enhanced security suites that are geared for users who don't mind paying for additional protection--as long as it's worthwhile. AVG Anti-Virus 9 introduces a few new features, claiming faster scan times, faster boot times, and other under-the-hood improvements.

Users who've used AVG 8 will find the interface nearly identical, and generally it's easy to use. From the main window, though, you must double-click to get further information on any feature, whether virus scanning, firewall protection, or updating. We'd like to see this streamlined, since there's no reason to click on any of them without wanting more details; it is a spare interface, otherwise. You'll find a full-blown scheduling utility for automating tasks and checking for new definitions as often as you'd like. Other perks include technical support and the ability to run on multiple operating systems. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode. The program doesn't obviously tax your system when scanning or when running in the background. There's also a new identity-theft assistance service, available for free and provided by a third party.

AVG Anti-Virus lacks the firewall, identity protection, antispam, and system tools that come in AVG Internet Security, although it's definitely more robust than AVG Free. In empirical testing, scan times were slower than expected, and the new firewall database proved to have autoapproval problems with some well-known programs. It also detected some image files as threats, when two other scans decided they weren't--we decided these were false positives. AVG might not be the fastest or the most effective available security option, but it still gets the job done and you're better off with it.

"It's solid. There are better but not by much."

June 23, 2010  |  By Ceadderman

 |  Version: AVG Anti-Virus 9.0.704

Pros

User interface is of the point and click variety. Almost all of the features can be accessed and used by novice system owners without hassle.

Cons

The only thing I don't like is that it's not point and click for specification of which pages you wish to add to the system. But that's not a big deal.

Summary

AVG is a reliable caviar type AV program for systems dependent on a hamburger budget. I always recommend AVG whenever someone complains about that certain AV program that hijacks your system when the license expires. If I want something else I can add it w/o fear as AVG hasn't a spiderweb of code written into every last folder. I don't need a uninstallation program and when my license expires it will still find and update it's files to the latest version prior to expiration. and will revert to AVG Free for any version thereafter. Unlike many other AV programs who I refuse to bad mouth.

"Good potential with bad flaws"

June 03, 2010  |  By gslv

 |  Version: AVG Anti-Virus 9.0.704

Pros

The usual virus and spyware protection, plus an important feature protecting you from websites that can infect you just by visiting them.

Cons

It hit me with all kinds of malfunctions. The 1 month trial period was fine. Then I paid for it, and as soon as the 30 days passed, the malfunctions started.
It tells you to uninstall ZoneAlarm firewall when installing, but AVG has no firewall.

Summary

Many of these reviews seem to be for the free version. What happens when you install this Pro version. This one is not with the firewall, but expects me to eliminate my ZoneAlarm basic firewall. I did not uninstall ZA. Everything fine during trial month.
After the 30 days, malfunctions started. Email scanner started failing. When I couldn't open Firefox I decided to uninstall AVG9 before my system disintegrated.
Now Firefox starts. Using AVG8 free now. What do I have for my $30? Access to Support for a year I guess.

May 18, 2010  |  By jamessteed

 |  Version: AVG Anti-Virus 9.0.704

Pros

Good virus catcher.

Cons

Keeps forcing me to use Baidu as my search engine even though I have checked 'no' a 1000 times. Then, it tries to do it again a month or two later. It just does not go away. It keeps popping up. Hard to get rid of.

Summary

Use it if you are prepared to be badgered to death in return for protection.

May 07, 2010  |  By Moneykidz1

 |  Version: AVG Anti-Virus 9.0.704

Pros

It's free.

Cons

No rootkit protection
Virus detection is only 90%
There are better alternatives like Avast! and Antivir
AVG is a CPU hog
