Though not as well-known as some competitors, this antivirus program offers rock-solid protection. AVG Anti-Virus provides all the necessities, including a tool for scanning your hard drive and e-mail, as well as a real-time shield to prevent infections.
You'll find a full-blown scheduling utility for automating tasks and checking for new definitions as often as you'd like. Other perks found in this Pro version include technical support and the ability to run on multiple operating systems. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode.
The program doesn't tax your system when scanning or when running in the background, and it always proved effective in our tests. The interface can't be described as beautiful, yet it is mostly simple to navigate.
Though the free version of this program will suffice for average folks, those who demand more control should certainly consider AVG Anti-Virus.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus 8.5.287
"Tons of False Positives, I have no Control"
Pros: AVG Pro includes anti spyware, email scanner, anti rootkit, etc. Seems to run quietly in the background.
Cons: I get a false positive (program mistake) at least once a month! Today it thinks iTunesHelper.dll is a Trojan horse - but w 100s of other users talking about it today, I know it's just a false positive. I click "show more info" and there's nothing.
Summary: There's no way to research more info about the virus AVG claims you have on its website. There's no way to double check what the other A/V programs think of your "infection" through virustotal.com because AVG blocks access to it. There's no way to d... read more >>

Version: AVG Anti-Virus 8.5.287
"A great program! Does a great job of protecting my PC."
Pros: A clean interface, easy to navigate. Quick install progress. Light on system resources, a very good detection rate and extremely customizable. Tecnhical support is fast and reliable. Contains a great array of features for effective protection.
Cons: Scans take some time to complete, a full system scan takes about 7 hours. Does not detect absolutely all viruses and spyware, but does a good job of it.
Summary: A good product. If your looking for effective home PC protection, I would most certainly recommend AVG. I have been using it for about 2 years now, and it has detected and removed almost all troublesome programs I have encountered. Although it does ... read more >>
