This antivirus program offers rock-solid protection. AVG Free provides the bare necessities, including a real-time shield to prevent infections, anti-virus and anti-malware wrapped up in one engine, and a link scanner for Web surfing with care.
By default, the application is set to search for new virus definitions daily, but you always can use the scheduling tool to change this. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode. The program doesn't tax your system when scanning or when running in the background and always proved effective in our tests. The new interface is much easier to navigate than in previous version, with tabbed navigation on the left assisting users in drilling down to the tools they need.
Though the free version of this program will suffice for average folks, those who demand more control should certainly consider AVG Anti-Virus Professional.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5.339
"Program de-activates every couple of months-no warning."
Pros: Greatly expanded abilities. I like the email check system most. Also the website warnings.
Cons: I have clicked on the AVG icon and found three times that it had "deactivated" all features several days before without any kind of notice. I end up removing the old AVG and downloading a new version and it is good for a couple of months.
Summary: It is ok when it works... I now must check it routinely to find out if it has deactivated.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5.339
"A very good anti-virus I think everyone should have AVG"
Pros: This program finds most viruses and spyware that other anti-virus software doesn't find. If you don't have an anti-virus software, AVG is a good one to start with. I have used it for years. And it is also free, so you can't beat that.
Cons: This software isn't perfect, but what anti-virus is. But AVG-FREE is good enough to get four stars from me, and I have used it for years. If you want the perfect anti-virus then you can keep dreaming. There is no anti-virus out there that is perfect.
Summary: Because no anti-virus is perfect I use more than one anti-virus software. Although AVG-FREE is a good one, you need to have all the virus protection you can have. I use three anti-virus programs and an anti-spyware program. And I suggest that every... read more >>

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5.339
"It had found things others missed! And its free!"
Pros: Very simple to operate, better than ESET NOD, BitDefender and others that I have tried. It found things ESET NOD32 business didn't even detect! And this is the free version!
Cons: No complaints. The cons? There are none....
Summary: Just like one of the other reviews stated, I wish I could get the full version for free. :-)
I know I know, they need to make that money like the rest of us...... -

"Good, but update is a bit bad"
Pros: Works easily, offers excellent protection, it keeps your emails safe, stops viruses before they start getting into your computer and causing havok.
Cons: Updates aren't always working and resident shield doesn't always detect everything.
Summary: Good anti-virus, but anyone who makes avg needs to ready the cons and fix them!
