This antiviral program offers rock-solid protection for no financial commitment. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition provides all the necessities, including a tool for scanning your hard drive and e-mail, as well as a real-time shield to prevent infections.

By default, the application is set to search for new virus definitions daily, but you always can use the scheduling tool to change this. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode. The program doesn't tax your system when scanning or when running in the background and always proved effective in our tests.

The interface can't be described as beautiful, yet it is mostly simple to navigate. Sure, you can plunk down a lot of cash for an antiviral application with more features, but AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition delivers the goods for free.

    "Inadequite and over rated."

    by Chainmail2006 on August 17, 2007

Pros: I do give "Grisoft" credit for trying. They release a new number (supposedly new version) often. I'm giving it three stars because it's the best thing I know of that makes me money. I do a little computer repair work for neighbors, my sons friends and friends of theirs, mostly high school teen agers who use laptops for school work and their families. I work on an average of two or three a week that have had this application installed on it. Once I get the computers (mostly laptops) going again, if I can, I install a different free anti virus application. Those are usually people I never have to do repeat work for again. I must say, that I'm proud of the download.com editors for no longer giving this software hyped up, misleading five star reviews. Way to go download.com. Point is that it still misses some of the most common, older viruses and trojans there are. It does not clean all it does detect. If you take the time to do some research on this application you will notice that it's not found at any reputable anti virus comparison wen sites. Ever wonder why?

    Cons: See pros:

    "Solid, simple, reliable"

by PVTele on September 7, 2007

Pros: Excellent detection rates (now rated Advanced+ by AV Comparatives) (they rate the paid edition, but it's the same engine, only more bells & whistles). The easiest interface of all AV products I've tried, regular, quick updates. Low memory footprint and CPU usage at all times. Good if basic scheduler. Scheduled scan runs in background almost unnoticeably. Above all, its stable and reliable - the best all-round AV you can get.

Cons: Full scan slightly slow - but as I said above, it is so polite in its use of resources you hardly know it's going on except for the systray icon.

"Visible update download manager and RAM consumer."

    by mr.correct on September 5, 2007

Pros: It is good to tell you that the download manager will inform you that they are actually downloading the updates for you. Nothing special.

Convenience, like instant noodles, just install it to receive ready protection. Not recommended for those who expect their computers to run at ultimate performance.

Cons: It consumes RAM during daily scans. Compared to avast home, its a difference. It has instant messaging protection and email scans. And discreet scans is expected. Both antivirus produces good scans. But if you are a game-aholic or expecting your computer to run at ultimate performance, I recommend you to choose avast home.

"Definately NOT one of the best freebies...but worth considering..."

by andyinteractive on August 26, 2007

Pros: This programme has been around for a few years and AVG is one of the most popular choices when it comes to free anti-virus protection. The programme has a good interface and it is easy to use and i admire the frequent and regular updates. This programme is fine for surfing everyday well known websites and offers decent protection for the novice surfer on approved and trusted websites.

Cons: I have downloaded this programme several times over the last 3-4 years because my usual McAfee anti-virus either crashes my PC/and/or expires so i use the obvious and most popular...which is AVG. Unfortunately each time i have used this i have had to reformat XP due to AVG missing infections on no less than three occasions. This programme is virtually useless if you are downloading music files or surfing unknown websites because it simply ignores any possible viruses. There is far better FREE protection than AVG such as 'Antivir' of which is far more effective. If you use 'Spyware Terminator 2.0' I would also recommend 'clam' anti virus of which is built into spyware Terminator of which takes up less rescources and is far more effective than AVG. This programme is way over rated and is simply not powerful enough to combat todays infections.
