This antiviral program offers rock-solid protection for no financial commitment. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition provides all the necessities, including a tool for scanning your hard drive and e-mail, as well as a real-time shield to prevent infections. By default, the application is set to search for new virus definitions daily, but you always can use the scheduling tool to change this. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG create a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode. The program doesn't tax your system when scanning or when running in the background and always proved effective in our tests. This app's interface can't be described as beautiful, yet it is mostly simple to navigate. Sure, you can plunk down a lot of cash for an antiviral application with more features, but AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition delivers the goods for free. Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.4
Pros: Finally the interface is updated. The layout is more XP looking which makes it look great. I have been using AVG free for over a year and have had no problems, it detects, removes with ease. There are no stupid pop-ups telling you to pay for the pro version or anything. Definitons are updated almost every day to give you the latest protection. It's effective, easy to use and is 100% free.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.4
"Much better than previous version"
Pros: Here's what I like about version 7.5
1. The interface is redesigned. It doesn't look like it belongs in Windows 98 anymore, it looks much more XP like.
2. Better heuristics, the heuristics are better than in the previous free version and it has the option to scan for alternate NTFS data streams.
3. It's free!
4. Does a great job at scanning, way better than norton or mcafee and doesn't use much memory. I tried NOD32 and AVG actually uses less memory. It only uses about 1MB of memory while idle which is impressive. It also doesn't use much while scanning and scans are pretty fast.
5. Smallest updates i've ever seen. I hate waiting for updates and then come to find out you have to restart your PC after waitinf 10 minutes for files to download. This isn't the care with AVG! Updates take seconds and they're in KB (yes Kilobytes!) When I first installed it the whole update was only about 64KB which is really small.
I can't recommend this program enough. If you're looking for a free antivirus that won't slow you down and is powerful, get this!
AVG come a long way since version 7.1 and I think grisoft is a great company who makes outstanding products.
Cons: The only thing I don't like is that there's no anti-spyware built in but you can download AVG antispyware free edition for that.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.4
"The best "free" antivirus program I've used."
Pros: This program does a decent job at protecting you from viruses. I recommend it to anyone not willing or able to pay for better security. I would say that it should protect you from about 90% of what's out there.
