• Not a true word processing application

  Pros

  My first impresssion was that this was a cool alternative to the XP version of Wordpad because it has the three features that I miss most in in the MS Wordpad - a spell checker, tabbed document interface and line and word count. Plus it has a few new cool features like checkpoints treeview and bookmarks toolbar. The GUI will not win any beauty contests, but it looks slick and professional. A view menu will allow you to minimise the clutter from too many toolbars.

  Cons

  There is no ruler that will enable you to exercise fine control over indents and margins. Neither can you access indent and margin numerical controls through a menu. Instead there are buttons that will nudge margins and indents by a predetermined amount. The same limitation exists for line spacing. Also there is no page setup where you can choose paper size and orientation of the page. Since you cannot wrap the text to the ruler what you see is not what you get. These are such severe limitations that I would classify this application as a glorified text editor rather than a word processor. As for it not being free, well, it does only cost $5.

  Summary

  Lacks vital paragraph and page formatting controls found in MS Wordpad and all decent word processing applications. Maybe Polyedit Lite would make a better Wordpad alternative if you want something basic that loads quicker than Open Office and does not use 300 Mb of your hard drive. Some other good Wordpad alternatves to consider are Cetus Wordpad, Atlantis Nova and AE Edit. I was not impressed with Wordtabs, QJot or Wordpad++.
