WinNc lets you organize your files and folders using a two-panel window layout that can show two different directories in the same window. In addition, this premium software offers a multitude of features that are not found in Windows Explorer, such as the ability to color-code and synchronize folders.
Pros
Tabbed file management: WinNc also allows you to have multiple tabs open, just like in a Web browser, with different directory pairs in each. Unfortunately, you cannot drag and drop files from one tab to another.
Built-in file encryption and compression: File encryption and compression are made much more accessible when compared to Windows Explorer, especially since before compression you have the ability to split large files into smaller portions. Compression speeds are what you would expect -- we zipped up a 14MB file in seven seconds.
Advanced features: While testing this software, we discovered many advanced yet extremely useful features, including the ability to set up a sync between two directories, create folders with different colors for different projects, create self-extracting archives, and modify the attributes of a given file.
Cons
Noticeable learning curve: The software is distinct enough from the standard Windows Explorer that you might find yourself wondering why you're not able to create a new folder or show the context menu for a file. Even so, it will not take you long to get used to it.
Stunted functionality: When you open the app's settings, you'll see a handful of features that are available only in the full software version. While no vital features have been disabled in the trial version, extra goodies like skins and a customizable favorites menu will only be available to you once you upgrade.
Bottom Line
If standard Windows Explorer is too tame for you, and you're looking for an alternative app with more features, WinNc will fit the bill nicely. However, be aware that with the increase in functionality comes an increase in complexity -- actions that usually take one step might now require two or more steps to accomplish.
