• The free Disk Explorer Pro is better in the long run.

  Uses a chaotic protection scheme that works by corrupting the databases of those suspected of using 'stolen' or 'fake' serial#'s, even if you bought the program. Sometimes this is a 'mistake' because the program isn't flawless due to the sophistication of the scheme, in other words, these schemes are worthless to begin with since hackers always get whatever software they desire, but when it 'goes wrong', that database you slaved for days to commit to Whereisit! may suddenly be inaccessible, and you'll have to start all over again. And by all accounts the 'programmer' is more concerned about hacker than paying customers.

  Summary

  My disk records are too important to entrust to a piece of software that may corrupt them just when I need to access them, and I'm not going to go through hours of carefully setting up the database with all the sophisticated features allowed with this program only to lose all that effort because the programmer wants to 'hurt' some idiot who probably wouldn't have purchased it anyway. Worst case scenario, I get screwed out of my money and time while the bums that don't pay just use something free such as the wonderful cataloger called Disk Explorer Pro, which I finally settled upon based on my analysis of comments from paying customers and a trial use. Besides, Disk Explorer Pro is much faster and has nearly the same level of options, but is focused more on the user and not trying to force folks to pay who probably wouldn't to begin with. Paying for software doesn't guarantee a concern for customer satisfaction, such as Windows itself.

• abysmally slow

  Searches aren't too bad once index is created.

  Cons

  Only use if you want to cripple your system while scanning. Not only is it incredibly slow (took hours to scan one drive, though admittedly large - 1 TB), it sucks up all memory (my system showed 98% usage until I closed it, then dropped to 12%) and makes running anything else at the same time completely impossible.

  Summary

  Don't waste your money. It's faster just to type out everything by hand.

• Good product, HORRENDOUS support

  Fast catalogs Works on hard drive & DVDs Fantastic options for automatic tagging based on file contents

  Worst technical support in the history of software (see review).

  Summary

  The product does a great job of quickly cataloging any disk drive, and then letter you later see and find files on that drive, whether it is currently attached to your computer or not. Great way to catalog both hard drives and DVDs. However, the support is so bad as to be almost comical. The person who wrote this is the most anti-customer developer I've ever encountered. His is like the "soup Nazi" character on Seinfeld. In fact, he is EXACTLY like this character. He calls you names and refuses to help. He tells you it is YOUR fault that if the program doesn't function correctly. I kept getting corrupted databases after updating catalogs. To this day, he has never offered even ONE helpful suggestion. I should publish his responses to that everyone can see them. Fortunately, if you back up the catalog, it is easy to simply use the backup and then update from there. The corruption doesn't happen too often. So, if you don't need support, and can live with an occasional glitch, this is actually a very good product, and except for the occasional corrupt catalog file, works extremely well.

  Flexibility - great search function - multipurpose "database" disk cataloguer.

  Not customised for audio cds but this is easily achieved with experiment and practice.

  Summary

  For a long time I was looking for a flexible free Audio Disk [CD] indexer. THIS IS IT!!! Insert a disk and it goes on line and downloads all the track info etc. Simple! It will also index data CDs etc - e.g. collections of software etc. It takes a little knowledge and practice to cutomise it, but it works beautifully. I can now [in seconds] find any compsosition, artist, composer etc.

  This is the best disk catalog software I have ever used. Powerful, extensible, regularly updated.

  Feature-wise, none.

  Summary

  Be wary of technical support. The developer claimed my paid MobileMe account was Freemail and refused to send me a replacement license file.

After a recent data loss I inquired regarding the possibility of restoring part of a catalog from an html report. <p> Robert Galle's response to me was: <p><p> <i>I don't find this question to be half serious. You are heavily underestimating the level of detail necessary to be collected at scanning time in order to have properly functional disk images and catalogs</i> <p> You know. . . a simple "No, I cannot do that," would suffice. <p> The program is easy to use, and is an excellent way to catalog large media collections, but Robert Galle, the developer, is a chump.
