It's a rare Windows user who has never deleted the wrong file. But the data you delete isn't gone until you overwrite it, and even then, it's sometimes possible to recover the data without expert help. A free tool, Undelete 360 can recover deleted data from your hard drives, USB drives, floppies, and digital cameras. It can recover files deleted from the Recycle Bin and those deleted directly by Windows but too large for the Recycle Bin. There's no guarantee that your data can be recovered or will all be there. Undelete 360 can recover deleted data, and there is nothing to worry about. It also includes a Wipe Files tool, which can securely delete files beyond recovery.

Undelete 360's blue tones and ribbon-style toolbar make it a nice match for Office and other modern software suites. Two tabs provide access to the program's tools: Recover Files and Wipe Files. To test Undelete 360, we copied a folder containing mixed data to a new directory, renamed it, deleted it, and emptied the Recycle Bin. Next, we selected our C drive in Undelete 360 and pressed Start. Searching our C and D drives took approximately a minute, and the results were displayed in the Files Found window with a directory view in the Grouped By panel. Files were viewable under headings like Deleted Files, File Preview, File Properties, Hex View, and Software Log, as well as by Filename, Path, and Status. The status of each file was marked as either Very Good or Overwritten. After selecting some files and pressing Recover, a pop-up asked us to configure our recovery options, such as keeping folder structure and recovering alternate data streams. We chose an output directory and pressed Start. While Undelete 360 successfully recovered the data, some files, such as JPEG images, were corrupted and could not be opened with Windows Photo Viewer, Paint, or Photoshop. Specialized file repair tools may be required for such cases.

Recent updates to Undelete 360 have improved its compatibility with Windows 10 and 11, allowing for more efficient scans and better performance with SSDs. A smart filtering system lets users narrow their search results by file type or creation date, making the recovery process faster and more intuitive. While these enhancements make the tool more effective, its limited success with heavily overwritten files and lack of technical support remain drawbacks.

Comparison with Recuva

For users seeking an alternative, Recuva by CCleaner is another popular data recovery tool. Both programs offer free versions, but Recuva's interface is simpler and more beginner-friendly, with a step-by-step recovery wizard guiding users through the process. Additionally, Recuva supports recovering data from a broader range of file systems, such as exFAT and ReFS, making it more versatile than Undelete 360 in certain scenarios. Unlike Undelete 360, Recuva offers an advanced deep scan feature that effectively identifies and recovers fragmented data. However, Undelete 360's secure file-wiping feature offers an advantage for users focused on data privacy. Choosing between these tools depends on individual priorities, such as ease of use or advanced recovery options.

Bottom Line

As Undelete 360's documentation points out, data recovery is not guaranteed. But with its robust recovery tools and newly added features, it remains a solid choice for everyday users. Exploring tools like Recuva or consulting professional services might be necessary for more complex or critical recoveries.
