• Mind Mapping at it's BEST

  Pros

  I can find all my info in an instant. Notes, important emails, web pages and files all at my fingertips. I use the Cloud services to keep my home brain and work brain both in sync. And the search capabilities are great too.

  Cons

  I love that I can access my Brain on the Cloud from my iPhone in read only, but I would love more editing capabilities here. I sent a note to support and the said that this is something that is in development, so I'm looking forward to it.

  Summary

  If you are into mind mapping, you should test the free version of the Brain. I try to test all the new technology out there, but I've never found anything that is comparable to this.

  Visual interface is great for managing complex data.

  Cons

  The Cloud Services portion is a disaster that simply does not work reliably and has resulted in data loss. The company is charging PREMIUM for a product that is simply not ready. The desktop application is better, but also very unpolished and clunky to use.

  Summary

  Web brain sync support horrible! I have this installed on a corporate pc, which like many in that environment, do not have admin rights. It takes weeks to get a new version approved and installed in this environment. The problem is, every minor unannounced upgrade they decide to do (version 6.0.7.8 to version 6.0.7.9) removes the ability of the previous version to sync to web brain. So you come in one day and discover things don't work. If you desire to incorporate this as a daily tool for file management (like they advertise you should), this become unworkable. This has happened multiple times with no warning. Why would such minor upgrades remove such basic functionality of the previous version you've paid for. I've paid for a year subscription to web brain and am not able to use it for weeks at a time until the approval process for the new version can be completed. I've already lost the equivalent of a couple months of my annual subscription. When I called their support to see if they'd at least prorate the annual subscription, my answer was no and too bad. Shame, I put time into learning this tool and felt although still very clunky, it had potential. The fact that the company feels there is no problem with removing core functionality with no notice to existing customers every time they do a minor upgrade makes this a tool that cannot be relied on for real work.

  Good user interface. Good web site publication. Flexible relationships (links).

  Cons

  Nonfree versions cost a lot to continue to upgrade over time. Doesn't allow flexible mappings to other software.

  Summary

  Easy to get addicted to, but once you buy in and start to amass your own models, be sure you can interface to other software as you want. Also, try to be happy with free version, or prepare to pay, pay, and pay again and again to get the features you feel you need.

  Keeps information connected in a unique visual map. Nicely implemented seach and navigation of information. Add almost any type of file to your information map. Regularly updated and strong support from the developer. Cross-platform.

  Cons

  Note editor is weak. On the pricey side (if you get the pro edition, which you should).

  Summary

  You can jam a ton of information from all kinds of sources into PersonalBrain and always feel like you can find what you need when you need it. The developer has many tutorials to help you get the hang of it. It's a terrific program if you're willing to fork over this kind of money.

  The interface provides a flexible environment for organizing almost anything. I can use PB on both my MacBook and my PC, and sync files via the new Web Brain feature.

  Cons

  I'd like the notes feature to feel less clunky.

  Very intuitive, easy to manipulate and to link to outside material.

  Haven't found them yet -- but like all apps, I expect that sooner or later I'll come across some and spend a lot of time cursing the thing.

  Summary

  I'm right in the middle of a long, complex mystery story set in a very definite place and this is ideal for keeping track of the timeline, background and environment. Something I've been looking for for a long time. Takes the place of about a zillion filecards and scotch tape to stick them to the wall.
