Slick, if not always smart, Sonique does what it should with some compromises. It supports the essential formats, along with skins and plug-ins, integrated Internet music searching via Lycos (decent) and Hotbot (useless), and links to music resources (parent company Lycos' music channel and the anemic Sonique site). Features are spread through a variety of screens making for a lot of extra clicking; and other little speed bumps tend to crop up. You can't, for example, add directories to your playlist (you must select all songs in the directory). Also vexing are basic usability violations, such as a small and slippery volume knob instead of a slider and an equalizer toggle that isn't sticky between screens. It is freeware, a plus, but with its elaborate download process requiring a membership (including your street address), Sonique could and should deliver a more competitive and compelling product.
I prefer Sonique since it does not uses so much resources compare to Winamp now. Its light weight actually, and modern. Without soundfx or plugins, sonique deliver crispy sound and crystal clear audio.
Cons
Depending on how you configure your Windows, the old Sonique may sometimes freeze, hang or even crash. But this is just a minor problem and does not damage your mp3 or what so ever.
Summary
This was the old Sonique that was suppose to be further developed by TerraLycos back in the 90's. But instead they handicapped the further advancement of Sonique. Los of loyalist to Sonique were sure Winamp will be nothing more that just a history but it was the other way around. Recently, 2008 the original creator of Sonique revived Sonique and RE-developed the entire program and released an even awesome-modern state of the art Sonique 2 (beta) and personally i have tested it. It will beat any other Mp3 player out there once the full release is out. The new Sonique can support Avi video files and will continue to grow. The best thing about it is that Sonique uses it's own filter/ codecs. Just Google for Sonique 2 beta and try it your self. If you were a fan of Sonique last time, please support the development of this product by donating. It will be A FREE MEDIA PLAYER for all.

Pros
A great player, even today. Very liquid in it's flow, and the ability to create free-form skins. Sounds good too!
Cons
Sometimes requires a lot of clickling to move around. No longer being developed.
Summary
You can no longer download this from Lycos, or whoever owns them at the moment. Don't even try. If you do, Mogran the Adjuster will reach out of your computer, grab you by the shirt, and shake you, shouting "This is serious, fool!"
Seriously, just use Google to search for it. It's on "The Museum of Sonique," Wikipedia has download links, etc, etc, etc...

Updated on Dec 8, 2009
Sonique is the only program that I allow to sit in my notification area.

Still best MP3 audio Player
Recommender
Pros
It has very good sound quality, takes little memory (opens very quickly), looks cool (with specific skin), has great interface and is simple to use. Visualizer is stylish. Best player for MP3´s.
Cons
Development stopped many years ago, which is sad for so great and potential player. Sometimes file won´t open and you have to restart player. It is hard nowadays to find skins for this player and apparently also player itself.
Summary
I like the design used with specific skin. It has working, clear, simple and good looking interface. audioEnlightenment engine provides very clear and crispy sound for MP3 combined with DFX plugin.
I have used this player for years and still I don´t know any other player that can beat it. I have tried others (WMP 11, WinAmp (many times different versions), VLC and some others), but I think that Sonique is still the best player. It is easy to understand that there is still fans for so old player.
