Editors’ Review

Download.com staff

SMART Notebook is classroom teaching and presentation software from SMART Technologies that builds lesson files around a page-based canvas connected to SMART Board displays, imported media, and annotation layers. The workspace stores pages, embedded objects, and media inside notebook files while editor panels keep drawing tools, navigation controls, and content libraries active.

SMART Notebook’s Digital ink captures handwriting as editable stroke data, while Object recognition interprets pen marks, erased strokes, and touch movement across lesson pages. Import tools also convert presentation files, images, and supported documents into editable or layered lesson content inside the editor.

Creative activity builder

SMART Notebook’s SMART Blocks insert interactive math objects, sorting activities, and draggable lesson elements that respond to object placement or touch input. These elements remain attached to page layers while preserving assigned object behavior during repositioning. Shapes, screenshots, text objects, and imported graphics can exist beside interactive content. On pages with many layered objects, arranging objects in visible order still requires manual control using layer tools and object stacking panels.

Activity Builder applies rule sets to lesson objects by defining accepted targets, movement triggers, and stored responses tied to object placement. When an item enters a selected area, the page checks and displays the stored state. Creation of new interactive activities requires Notebook Plus licensing, while the base edition can open existing activity pages or display them as fixed lesson content. However, pages with multiple interactive zones can become visually dense during editing.

Import routines convert PDFs and slide presentations into notebook pages, with text boxes, shapes, and annotations remaining editable when the document structure supports object extraction. SMART Ink and SMART Product Drivers operate as separate installed modules that connect annotation tools, pens, erasers, and gesture input to supported display hardware. These modules extend writing tools across notebook pages, though some touch gestures, hardware controls, and pen-specific actions remain unavailable without the driver package.

  • Pros

    • Interactive object-based page editor
    • Built-in math and activity modules
    • Layer-aware document importing
    • Modular hardware annotation support
  • Cons

    • Manual layer management on dense pages
    • Hardware features depend on separate drivers

Bottom Line

Unified classroom authoring

SMART Notebook combines page authoring, annotation layers, media embedding, object-based activities, and imported lesson content inside a single editor. It stores handwriting as editable stroke data, applies interaction rules to lesson objects, and converts supported files into layered pages when object data is available. Dense page layouts can require manual layer management during editing, and hardware-linked annotation or gesture tools remain dependent on separate SMART driver modules rather than the editor alone.
