  Summary

  I've been a RipIt user for a number of years. When I first started using it you simply would submit discs that didn't work and shortly thereafter they'd release an update that fixed it. But I noticed that once they started offering this App in various combo offerings with other products the updates basically stopped. Today this app still works but if you want to back-up a Disney movie forget it. Handbrake is becoming the only option for most discs as time stretches on with no updates

  Pros

  I wanted to backup my DVD movies onto my iMac and use with my apple TV using iTunes. This product was so easy to use and didn't overwhelm me with options - I have used handbrake quite a bit - Ripit has less fine tuning, but converted the DVD's into m4v's for iTunes in 1 step - after setting up only a few options, then its just insert the DVD, click compress, and it does the rest. I have played a few of my converted DVD's on the my 53" HDTV through apple TV and the quality is good - not blu-ray by any means but for a true digital on-demand style library of my dvd collection - I am pleased. And now I can use the files on my phone and tablets too. It gave me 10 free rips, after that I actually purchased the full version so I could complete my entire library.

  Cons

  1. Less flexibility than handbrake - to some, this may be an issue but to me, all i wanted was a 1-step DVD to iTunes import and this works in that way. 2. Takes about 50-70 min from ripping, compressing, to appear in iTunes (I think pretty standard) 3. Would be useful if there was an option to add the DVD cover art and some of the file tag information - but this is easily done post with iTunes also

  Pros

  I am pretty much non-technical and have had absolutely no problems with this software. My question to those who bemoan not being able to use backups on Windows: If you have a Mac, why would you ever go back to Windows? If you need to run Win programs, use Win XP under Virtual Box from Oracle on your Mac. Its faster than native WIN. I converted to Mac after Vista and have never looked back. Ripit does everything it claims and with a great, simple GUI. It is fast and appears bug-free, if you use it as instructed. Well worth what they charge for it. You won't be sorry you bought this. Unless, of course, you are a Windows devotee, in which case you should be used to disappointments. No, I do not work for Ripit or Apple.

  Cons

  Haven't found any, but then, my needs are not exotic. Just backups.

  Summary

  This is a good, solid program and handles discs I couldn't do with Handbrake. I am very happy with it.

• Can't Use Your Backup on Windows

  Pros

  Gives you a simple and quick DVD backup of most DVDs

  Cons

  The backups won't play on Windows 7. They play fine on Mac OSX but who backs up movies only playable on one operating system. I emailed support and they basically said "it's for Mac, oh well."

  Summary

  Fine if you never plan to watch your movies on a different operating system I suppose.

  Unfortunately a colossal waste of money. Colossal rip-off. Fairmount and VLC are much more efficient. They too fail on many DVD's, but not like ripit.

  Tried to rip a movie I own to m4v. Like the PR says, it would be much nicer to have it on my Mac/iPad. I selected the Video Target as iPad in the preferences. It didn't work. Help was useless. Going back to HandBrake

  Pros

  Only used it 3 times, but it has worked well. Great quality iPad videos. Easy to use with just one click to rip and compress multiple chapters from DVD to iPad format.

  Cons

  The only issue I've had may be the fault of my external DVD drive. RipIt wasn't seeing the DVD, but if I opened the DVD in the Finder it would start to work. I'm thinking my drive was sleeping and Finder woke it so it became available to RipIt.

  Summary

  Works well. Just the one issue and it had an easy workaround. It would be nice if RipIt could do this without having to do the Finder trick, but overall very happy.
