  Are you prepared for 58.8 MB installed, for a program that opens so slowly that you almost have time to make a coffee, to reveal a battleship grey interface that doesn't even maximise to full screen?

  Summary

  Things have moved on, KnowledgeBase hasn't, and it ought to be dead and buried. Don't waste your time downloading it.

  Pros

  It does the job, and you can place anything in your articles (links, pictures, colored text). The program itself is small so it fit easily on an USB Key.

  Cons

  GUI sucks. The database could use some compression (the sample database have a dozen of SMALL articles, and the DB is 50 MB!). The search is slow. You can't define any section. Bad shortcut key association.

  Summary

  My idea of a knowledge base is a place where you can store many informations of any types. It could be some piece of code, some information about network tools, some informations about the way to take care of your bonsais, and even some of your mom recipes. Without any section definition, its just a bunch of mixed document where you need to search. You can define keywords, but usually keywords are used to accelerate a search, not to define sections. The list of documents contain some sort of extremly slow delphi database grid. Plus, when you click on an item in the list, it take like a second before the row get selected (it should be done in a millisecond!). When you click on an article, it doesn't load it, it just put the > marker in front of the row to select it so there's no reason for taking so long. To load an article, it take 3 seconds. I don't know why. I've a dual core 2Ghz with 2GB of ram. The database should be compressed. I know if the sample database is so huge because the programmer included bitmaps as blob objects in his database, but could use some compression. Compressions functions are embeeded in Windows XP. There's no need to support Windows 95/98/2000 anymore. About the shortcut association. People who want to find something in a knowledge base want to find something quick. Associate the function to find something to CTRL-F, not F5. I know that the programmer used CTRL-F to find a word in the actual article shown, but its no use! Or at least, place a textbox in the toolbars for those who can't remember usual shotcuts. So the main reason why i gave 3 stars is because its free, otherwize this application would have got a 1 star. I used Personal Knowledge System and Remlap KnowledgeBase 2.21, and so far Remlap is better. But if anyone know any other KB application, please write a review to tell me the name of this app, and i will be happy to use it.
