Secure and reduce size of PDF files.

PDF Shrink reduces the size of PDF files by optimizing the resolution and compression method of images, removing unused elements such as metadata and thumbnails, eliminating duplicate images and compressing other parts of a PDF file. PDF Shrink can reduce most types of PDF files from 10 to 90% of their original size. PDF Shrink makes it easy to optimize PDF files for use on the web, for email attachments and for on-screen reading. The drag and drop interface allows for setting different compression and resolution choices for color, grayscale and monochrome images. Three common configurations are included; however, the user can create unlimited custom configurations. Batch processing is supported with the ability to load multiple files and folders into a processing queue. PDF Shrink simplifies the creation of optimized PDF files even further using Mac OS X's PDF Services - part of the "Save As PDF" menu in the Print dialog. Simply select "Create PDF Service" from the Configs menu and name the workflow. It\'s as simple as that. Then, whenever you create a PDF from the Mac OS X Print Center, you can automatically optimize your PDF using PDF Shrink.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I prepare a lot of single-page PDF slides and multi-page PDF documents containing placed pixel images (JPEGs, TIFFs), using Adobe Illustrator primarily, along with TeX and Mathematica, since I find this approach preferable to PowerPoint or Keynote at least for my work flow in preparing presentations. In doing this I've used PDF Shrink repeatedly to shrink the resolution of pixel graphics and remove unneeded metadata after the PDF has been Saved, and have always found it easy to use, effective, and reliable. I also like to keep the master copies of my PDF slides with Illustrator's "Preserve Illustrator editing capabilities" turned on so I can quickly reopen and edit them in Illustrator if needed. Unfortunately this seems to mean an overhead of an additional 350 to 400 kB in file size for these masters. PDF Shrink capabilities include an option called "Remove Private Application Data." Turning on this option and applying PDF Shrink to a set of master files can produce copies that are reduced from 400 kB to under 20 kB each I've also always gotten quick and helpful feedback from the vendors crew when I emailed queries to them.

Program provides easy set up for printing, web, and iPhone applications. However you can achieve similar results with the paid version of Adobe Acrobat. Just go to "save as", select "Adobe PDF Files, Optimized" and select "Settings". You will see options for the sampling, compression method, pixels per inch, and quality. Thus this software is useful only if you do not have the Adobe Acrobat Pro.

I ran a file (scanned and OCRed with ReadIris) through PDFShrink. The file was about 2.3MB to start. PDFShrink reduced it to 2.1MB. Acrobat 6 reduced it to 548K. I played around with the PDFShrink settings, but wasn't able to get the file much smaller than 2.1MB. Granted, I didn't try too hard. So, PDFShrink is good if you don't already have Acrobat. If you do, it's a waste. And batch processing is really weak. Why can't I select a *FOLDER* and have it reduce all PDFs in the folder tree???

Unfortunately, Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.02 crashed every time I tried to compress my .pdfs. But not PDFshrink. Reducing a 17MB file to 1.5MB, while retaining document clarity, is what I was after and what PDFshrink delivered. Thanks!

I had a 1mb powerpoint file, which i just 'saved as pdf', creating a 12.9mb pdf file. Using pdf shrink this became 972kb!!!! (I used settings such as NOT deleting thumbnails, and on MAXIMUM jpeg quality for compression (admitedly only 72dpi which is where i believe the savings came in, but still). After viewing both pdfs at actual size there is so little difference that it is barely noticeable.

Many of the files were reduced significantly: 20-40%. Also very easy to use: just drop a folder of files and it does the rest. It is infinitely better than Acrobat's compression feature.
