PCTuner for Windows

This system tweaker is only for the most trusting of users. PCTuner's minimalist interface merely displays system memory and hard-disk size counters. A list of options is not accessible. All any user can do is press the Optimize button and hope for the best. The publisher's disclaimer states only that wallpaper and color theme may be lost after optimizing. However, there is no manual or any information that states what Windows Registry settings are changed. Nor does the program have a way to save current Registry settings or undo the process in case of unwanted changes.

This program is certainly easy to use, but results weren't impressive and none of our testers found extensive system speed improvements. Some did report that display settings were lost, just as the disclaimer warned. During our tests the publisher's Web site was unavailable. Nothing in the demo application states the length of the trial or what happens to changes after the end of the test period.

Making users take a leap of faith isn't the proper way to write software. We can't recommend Registry-changing software that gives so little information as to what changes are made.
