From the developer: "ParseRat v2.0 Parses, converts & restructures files. Never again re-key legacy data. Reads most files including XML, page image print files and other multi-line data blocks from other processes, fixed format, delimited, dBase, structured binary, etc. Can import from system clipboard. Valuable for extracting data from legacy processes or those where data can only be exported as printed reports. Reads ASCII and EBCDIC. Intelligently parses & converts dates (including Julian & Y2K), names & addresses into components, genderize names, etc. can generate Soundex and perform intelligent DeDuplication. Restructure names into different element sequence (e.g. from "phonebook" format to "mailing list" format including elimination of noise words like "fax line" or "residence"). Generate titles (Mr, Ms. etc) from first names. Convert addresses into standard (user defined) formats. Automatically recognize and extract URL or EMail addresses from input records. Convert string output to UPPER CASE, lower case, Proper Case (Mixed Case - with intelligent handling of capitalization exceptions like McDonald, O'Rourke WordPerfect). Convert numeric information from decimal, hex or scientific to decimal, hex or scientific notation. Output as XML, fixed format, delimited, mailmerge or dBase. Can export to system clipboard for pasting into other programs and databases. No "Language" to learn, all done by point-and-click in Windows."

The poor man's parser of choice

- Visual interface allows you to easily recognize patterns in fixed length records as you determine record length by trial-and-error - for each field that you identify, you can assign attributes appropriate to the field type (e.g. a DATE field, or TEXT field), which help you visualize the data and helps you output the date into a recognizable form with little effort
Cons
- the product can OUTPUT to a dbase-compatible output file (i.e. not just to CSV), however, it doesn't seem to be able to recognize dbase files on input, if the dbase file header is corrupt - there didn't appear to be any date arithmetic available - although several variants of DATE field interpretation were available when parsing the data, it was not able to recognize "Julian" or "UNIX" based date/timestamps
Summary
ParseRat provides a lot of power for a very affordable price. The inability to recognize Julian or UNIX style date fields made the product not quite up to the task I required; but it was good enough to provide the majority of parsing capability, creating an output file that I then needed to put through another "custom" step to deal with the dates. It's a product I would purchase.

Pros
I had to decifer over 1 million lines of code and Im not a computer programmer. This did the trick to allow me to open up in excel.
Cons
took some time to learn how to use it, but the 1000 line test helped.

Having a lot of space in the screen Why a programmer cannot think in the users? Dificult to understand. The time it takes to download you'll need to take the decision of uninstall it.

Poor design, poor interface, very very ugly, it looks so amateur like, kind of like my first B program. AND OH MY GOD ! They charge 50$ for this ! You can't even resize the main window ! Ridiculous ! And of course, it didn't work with my files ! Install anything on your machine but this software

Anyone who has to deal with multiple mailing lists or de-duplication of records will really appreciate the intelligent address parser, phone number parser, and Soundex option.
