If you're not already a pro at using the command line, OnyX is a solid choice for conducting routine maintenance and tweaking the interface on your Mac. This free utility shares much of the functionality of applications like Cocktail (which its help files suspiciously resemble), and it can help you with everything from checking S.M.A.R.T. status on your disks to configuring the Dock, Finder, and Dashboard and Expos to your liking.

OnyX can even help you run Unix utilities and change your desktop to an animated background. As with all OS-tinkering applications of this kind, most features work most of the time, but your mileage may vary when it comes to effectiveness and stability--so buyer beware (especially given that OnyX doesn't cost anything).

OnyX is a utility of maintenance, optimization, and personalization for Mac OS X. It also makes it possible to configure certain hidden parameters of Finder and the Dock and to remove a certain number of files when become cumbersome. Several changes such as opening panels from menu and shortcuts, updating the dyld's cache, rebuilding the spotlight index in the automation panel, and other improvements.

Version 1.9.8 includes enable/disable mail data detectors; show/hide the iTunes's link arrows; enable/disable the iTunes's genre column; error -1712 corrected; updated wedish, German, and japanese translations; and updated uninstaller.
