Developer’s Description

Play an online space battle game fighting against people around the world.

Netrek is a free online multiplayer space battle game with a Star Trek theme. The ultimate goal is to wipe out the enemy race fighting through the enemy front line. You and your team battle, bomb and take planets to overtake the enemy. Use different ships and different weapons to battle against people around the world. Up to 16 people per game battle against each other over the Internet on a virtual battlefield. Since you are always teaming up with and playing against different people the game is extremely intense. There are multiple servers ready for you to play on and they are online 24x7.

This release was well designed. Have played earlier versions of the game and this is is by far the best. The zoom feature, graphics and additional add-ons to help newer players are great.

Pros
It's a simple game (that will work on old computers), but it's made well. Essentially, it's in the old 2d space shootem ups gene however Netrek has managed to bring this into the current age. It does this by drawing on the competitive nature of people by creating teams. Essentially you fly on a 2d plane, shootup your opponents and attempt to take over the opposing teams planets. And this is strangely addictive. Competitive people run the risk of addiction by playing this game. <p> 3.5 stars
Cons
Essentially, there's little actual depth to the game, but then again the game isn't designed for depth. The PlayNetrek game promo pretends depth that doesn't exist. The games strengths lie elsewhere.

Summary
Have played for about 4 months on an earlier release. This one is more user friendly then the older version. I like the graphic updates and the network connection seems a lot more stable.

I used to play this late night at ucb. Some were battling with students at ucla... It's a almost like 20yrs ago. Back then it ran on a sun workstation. lol. Ah how time flies! Anyway, game is dated. Fun is still there. I am not the new generation game will even have the patients to learn how to play it.

Middle click to fire torpedos? And I can't change the controls? Awesome! That means that people who use laptops can't play this game! What foresight! Oh and the graphics were amazing...ly bad.

Pros
Great graphics, free (can't beat that), has no spyware, adware or any other virus. It's a great game, best played in short bursts, because it gets repetitive fast. Also worth noting that the it's a small download so you won't have to wait long!!!
Cons
'Repetitive' is my main issue with this game, otherwise a great game to enjoy in short bursts.

Game is a lot of fun. Kind of like a space age version of chess but with 8 people on each team. Can really become intense towards the end of a game. Very exciting to play.

Been playing Netrek a long time and this latest update is incredible. Full color ships and planets, great 3d sound effects. The new tutorial is great for new players and even the not so new ones. Walked through it and found it helpful even though I have already played a while. Nice job on the latest version, highly recommend this game.

Already a great game, they did a nice job on this new version. New options, great graphic and sound improvements. I played the previous versions so did not need the tutorial but it is nice to have to help new players starting out. Worth upgrading if you had a previous version and definitely worth downloading of you have never played before.
