Mountain for Mac provides a new and comprehensive interface for mounting and unmounting drives, as well as providing more precise controls. It also demonstrates how your drives are being accessed by your active applications.

Ejecting and remounting: This is a very handy feature. You can eject drives from your system and then reconnect them whenever you want, without having to physically unplug the drive.

Drive grouping: If you work with a lot of external drives, then being able to group them together and mount or unmount them as a group can be a nice little time saver.

Handling active apps: We've all gotten the error message that a drive can't be ejected because an app is busy using it. Mountain will identify which programs are blocking your ejection and quit them, so you can eject drives seamlessly.

Narrow audience: Only a very small number of users in enterprise environments might actually derive a lot of use from this type of app.

Bottom Line

If you have to manage a huge number of volumes throughout the workday, then try Mountain. For most casual users, it provides a few neat features, like being able to eject and remount a drive without detaching any cabling, but probably won't add a huge amount of practical benefits to your ecosystem.

Editor's note: This is a review of the trial version of Mountain for Mac 1.5.3.

Developer's Description

Living seamlessly in the menu bar Mountain allows you to manage volumes with ease.
Living seamlessly in the menu bar Mountain allows you to manage volumes with ease. With Mountain you can mount, unmount or eject drives with two easy clicks. Unmount a single drive or eject all external drives at once. Unmounted drives will be spinned down and can either be unpluged or reactivated in Mountain without the need to unplug the USB cable and re-plug it again.

Mountain identifies and notifies you about applications that block drives from being ejected and allows you to easily exit the applications. Mountain can be set to notify you whenever a drive becomes available or an external device can be safely unplugged. A click on the notification will open the drive in Finder. The Mountain menu bar icon will indicate if external volumes are connected or if it is safe to unplug all connections including network connections.
