- There are freeware tools that do an adequate job of moving, deleting, and renaming file paths greater than 256 characters (i.e. Long Path Fixer). Price for this software $18.90 for deleting files only, plus another $9.70 to copy files, $9.70 to rename files, etc...

- I have an old external hard drive with a very deep file structure that my Windows 7 machine wouldn't handle, so I did a quick search and found this application which apparently will handle those files. I probably would have (grumblingly) purchased it for $18.90 without looking to see what other tools were available, but then I found that $18.90 seems to be only for a version that can delete files. You have to pay an additional $9.70 to copy files, $9.70 to rename files, and also $9.70 to delete files that are locked due to issues with permissions, etc. That's $48.00 in total, which is VERY steep for a simple software application that has such limited use. (On the other hand, the developer offers a 3% discount if you are a student, pensioner or veteran. Wow!) Fortunately I found Long Path Fixer, which, while not perfect seems to do everything I need.
