This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Clearly the developer has put in a decent amount of time on the design of the app. However, there are a large number of opportunities that have been missed. The program (and the supplied examples) functions more like a trip diary than a planning tool. The data fields are free-form - that's ok for keeping a diary, but a trip planner would better serve with fields dedicated to travel type, lodging, and reservation numbers (advance paid deposits would be nice also). Similarly, airline, train, etc info and fields for the same are essential. Perhaps beyond the author's programming skills, but the maps should allow route calculations for the traveler who prefers driving - again, these are essentials for this app to have actual value beyond that of a diary. When I first stumbled across the app, I was quite excited, but the app falls far short of my expectations and the needs of most serious travelers. As I travel some 6 months out of the year, I hope that this app will evolve and include actual travel planning tools. My credit card will be ready when and if that occurs. One further thought: integration with an iPad version of the app would make the app worth a veritable fortune to the developer.

But then the map would need to be much better and the software would have to support typical travel activities and topics (flights, car rental, hotel etc.). I could not ind out what kind of additional value this software would give. It's a simple editor not much more.

 Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I am one that likes to plan out trips well in advance, and also revisit past trips, so this program caught my eye when I first saw it. I've been playing around with this for the past couple of days, and though fun and easy to use, there are a couple of things I think (though I am not a developer) the developers might want to consider. Firstly, the map used in Knapsack looks awful when you zoom all the way in. I'd prefer them to use Google Maps instead (though there is a link that takes you to Google Maps), or something more detailed. There were multiple activities I pinned in Paris, and it's not possible to pick specific activities from the map without having to click the horde of pins multiple times until you find the activity you're looking for. It'd be nice if you could get in closer to specific areas (ala Google Maps) on the map so you can plan or access more specific memories. Also, since the pins ask you for longitudinal and latitudinal positions, it'd be swell if you could search for specific places (cities, restaurants, etc.) within Knapsack, instead of having to find the information somewhere else. Secondly, I wish you could add photographs for each activity in the itinerary. It would also be nice if you could add multimedia to activities as well. For example, I have a short video I made of the Eiffel Tower lighting up and would love to be able to access it from the itinerary. This would help "re-live" old trips. Those are the two major things that come to mind. I'll keep playing with it during the trial period, and then I'll decide whether to buy it or not.
