From the developer: "HTMLArea is a WYSIWYG editor replacement for common 'textarea' fields in HTML forms. Users can change the font size/color, make it bold/italicized/underlined, add bullets and numbering, insert images and links, and more. It works with any server-side software that accepts forms, including PHP, ASP, Perl, etc. and enables users to format their content as easily as if they were using a Word Processor. No HTML knowledge is required. Once the form is submitted, the raw HTML is passed along through your CGI script for use in your program."

First of all, this is NOT software in the sense that it has an installer or an exe, etc. Second of all, it is NOT good at all! It stinks, and you could do better with any number of real free software programs! Third of all, I still use FrontPage!
Summary
There are way too many false positive comments here for this terrible and useless "program"! This is only a javascript file attached to an html file, and it is terrible! I can NOT stand it when people write bogus positive comments just to up their total positive comment average! The last comment was very accurate, and the real program is on the coder's website, and as of January 07, 2010 it costs $200.00!!! This should be removed from cnet.com, zdnet.com, and download.com!!! Why? Because it isn't even supported anymore, and because it is nothing!!! I hate when something takes my time and effort because of fake positive comments!!! CNET, please remove these bogus fake programs so I don't have to try them out!!! AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!

This is a great tool for web developers. The cost is too low! I use it for my technical support forums. It was very easy for me to customize to and and change features.

We have a backend maintenance section for our website where non-technical people can update information on our site. However this has always been a tedious process because they do not understand how to use basic HTML formatting. This product solves a big problem for me and should hopefully lead to better content on our site. The best thing about htmlArea is that it works straight away. You can add it to your site in under five minutes. I wish I knew about this a long time ago.

This really saved me. I was working on a similar thing in Java for our web hosting and editing concept, and I'm so glad I found this instead, it's fast, it's easy to change, it's free, it's easy to use, it's easy to adapt, what's not to love?

I used htmlArea in an application designed to give industrial machinery workers the ability to add problems, causes, and solutions to a dynamic knowledge base. Although I only used a portion of the whole product, it served its purpose well and myself and the company I developed it for are very pleased with the results. Too bad MSHTML isn't open source so we could use this product freely on the web and not limit our users. :(
