Love this App
niesal- Pros
- I have been using this for a while. Although it is free, you can purchase it through the App store for a nominal fee and I am happy to do that since it is a very valuable program to me.
- Cons
- None that I can find
- Summary
- Great program. Get it to find all files even if hidden. Better than spotlight.
One of my most-used apps
waldstille- Pros
- It is very easy to use and finds the files I need (I find Spotlight nearly useless). Until very recently, it was free, and even though a modest sum is now requested, payment is not enforced so if for any reason you can't pay, you can still use it.
- Cons
- The difficulty in buying the app. I would willingly pay for it but when I went to App Store, I was told it was already installed and could not buy it. But that seems to be more a problem of App Store than this app.
- Summary
- Finding a file easily is one of the most important things for a user, and I find this app to fit the bill. In the old days this function was built into the OS, but since the advent of Spotlight, which is extraordinary in its inability to perform this simple and basic function, an app like Find Any File has become indispensable. There may be other apps just as good, but of the ones I've tried, I like this one best and will not bother trying out others since I can't really imagine anything better for my very basic need.
No difference in 1.51 except for a nag screen
JonCalgary- Pros
- Finds files quickly, and in networked storage which is something Spotlight cannot do.
- Cons
- The "upgrade" from 1.5.0 is not necessary. The author has decided to make some money, so has added it to the Apple App Store, The "upgrade" now has a beg nag screen that appears every so often. Don't bother upgrading unless you wish to compensate.
- Summary
- Very good search product, although I wish it would list the files it found while searching, instead of waiting for the search to be completed.
Quick and easy
lawrencecpaulson_dotmac- Pros
- The simple way to search for a file. Unlike Spotlight, it searches the entire hard drive. It's especially good for files that have been hidden away in obscure, possibly invisible folders.
- Cons
- It's a one trick pony, but what else should it do?
- Summary
- It's the best of the alternatives to Spotlight. Just type part of a file name and press the return key! It has a few more advanced selectors also.
Best Find Utility Overall
yeidel- Pros
- Find files by filename, date, etc. Easier UI and faster-running than any alternative. "find inside folder" option. Option to search with "Root" privileges. Optional outliner-style display shows found files in position in the file tree.
- Cons
- None in the software, but we shouldn't need an add-on to get an acceptable find-by-name utility.

Restores intuitive search functionality to OS X
JuanDaRiguera- Pros
- Simple Intuitive FAST!! Default settings accommodate most searches Can specify directory to be searched Searches with root privileges (easily finds hidden files) Free...but I'm going to send money anyway
- Cons
- There are no cons with this application.
- Summary
- Find Any File is exactly what I want (and have been sorely missing) - just a very simple find utility whose default fields are "Name" and "contains" (the configuration I use most), which also lets me specify the directory I want to search. I performed the crucial test immediately-searching for a hidden item. Find Any File found it in a flash. BRAVO! In one swell foop, Find Any File does an end run around Snow Leopard's idiotic exclusion of hidden files from its searches. OS X has caused me no end of grief with its steadily deteriorating search functions, which become less intuitive, more restrictive, and more poorly documented with each new system release. It is a troubling sign-one that suggests (to me, at least) that Apple is losing its way. I sincerely hope I'm mistaken on that point. Anyhow, Find Any File is a great discovery. I've been using Easy Find when necessary, but it's really not the best tool for most of the searches I need to do. Find Any File is exactly the right tool for the vast majority of searches I would want to do. It restores basic, simple, intuitive search functionality to OS X.
Powerful, Easy, Flexible, Nimble, Smart, Quick, USEFUL!
sonicraft- Pros
- Logical, intuitive interface, better results-- finds what you are looking for. Much more flexible, useable and configurable than Apples find or Spotlight. Keeps improving! A fantastic array of search conditions.
- Cons
- I honestly can't think of ANYTHING negative. It's really that good.
- Summary
- Often I've done a simple search in post-Tiger Finder and gotten no results. I then made some foolish decision based on the idea that the file didn't exist; only to discover that the file was right there and Finder's search function has some unknown rules about what it will and won't show in search results. Grrrr! Also, Finder's Search and Searchlight removed features from the older sherlock & find functions. And finally, with spotlight I now must sift through all the files that contain my search string WITHIN the file-- which is sometimes useful, but not always. When I discovered Find Any File, I was so relieved. I felt BACK IN BUSINESS. I use it regularly and am very glad to support this developer.
It seems very good
