Despite its easy-to-use menu and purported features, FileControl for Mac's operating problems make it a poor option for those looking to check for file modifications. The program's failure to recognize common folders made us question its overall functionality.

FileControl for Mac installs easily and requires administrator privileges in order to run. It also comes with both a manual and README file, which states that the program first installs in Trial mode and will run as such for four weeks. The README file has not been updated for some time so the users can ignore this part as the developer has since made this program free. Upon startup the application opens into a medium-size window with no design elements to dress it up. The user can select from three sub-menus using buttons along the top. The first allows for choosing the folder to analyze. Clicking an add folder icon opens a finder window, which is easy to navigate. Clicking the Analyze button begins the analysis of the selected folder. Users can also select criteria from a second menu that allows certain files to be ignored as well as add and remove filters. In the final sub-menu, the analysis results are returned in a large window, which displays additional information on the file. Here the user can also set to filter the reported changes by specific dates and times. Strangely, the year option ends with 2010. Unfortunately, during testing the program couldn't process any items we tried, even after multiple attempts. The message stated that the ignore criteria may be restricting all of the files from being analyzed. Even after removing all of the check boxes, the error still continued. We tested this program on Mac OS X 10.8.4.

Despite its easy-to-navigate interface and obviously great idea, FileControl for Mac fails to operate well enough to recommend to users.

Developer’s Description

Finds files that have been changed anywhere on your system.
FileControl helps you easily determine which files have been installed, downloaded or changed anywhere on your system. Using FileControl, you can quickly: specify which folders and volumes will be analyzed for changes, specify which files and folders are to be ignored during change analysis, filter the reported changes by date range and/or find by name content, inspect and reveal changed items and export changes as tab-delimited text or XML.
