eZ Publish is an open source content management system (CMS) and a development framework (CMF). While the CMS is standardized out of the box functionality and solutions of eZ Publish, the CMF consists of flexible engines for further customization and extensions. The CMS and CMF are seamlessly integrated and part of the eZ Publish distribution. Based on the same software, eZ Publish has two versions; the eZ Publish Pro (a commercial non-GPL version) and eZ Publish GPL (free open source GPL license version).

This product is not particularly easy to use. I concur with IT Services Consultant. A great many assumptions are made in the documentation, and the user interface does not give you any idea what you are doing when changing settings. I would also add that support is very scant.

I keep installing this everywhere I go ... Not because of the the CSM, but because it's a simply way to get a webserver with, Apache PHP and mySQL ... I did try the CMS and it's got great features, however it's very heavy and requires quite a large system ...

eZ Publish is one of the best open source CMS solutions available. Plone and OpenCMS are the others, worth looking at. This solution is very usable, but like most complex enterprise products it requires a little bit of training, and can't be picked up in five minutes. ;-) However, we have implemented this CMS for all kinds of business customers and have never failed to be able to fulfill even the most complex requirements. If you're looking for a meaty CMS that can handle advanced requirements, with a commercial company to back it up (it's dual licensed), eZ Publish is seriously worth considering. Major UI improvements are fourthcoming with the 3.5 release due last quarter 2004.

Summary
Ignore the 'EZ' tag for the meaningless hyperbole it is. The product is awash with umplaced assumption of user expertise. It launches immediately into jargon-ridden screens and numerous attempts to connect without the slightest hint of reasonable explanation. If you don't already know what you're doing with this product, downloading it won't help. Usability is not considered. By experts, for experts only. I uninstalled it within five minutes of installing it.
