Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />TotalAccess 2004 for Mac is a very stable app that is useful for most EarthLink customers. Many of the reviews below are incorrect, exaggerated or only focus on one small, personally undesired function. This app easily and quickly allows you to create a new account, configures your computer to connect to the Internet and provides useful features for most users on various connection types. It mirrors your system preferences and does not interfere or delete anything, especially not your network locations or modem preferences.
Accelerator is only for dial-up customers and does reduce image quality in trade for faster surfing. The explanation below is very accurate, as it works with all browsers, including Safari. It is very easy to turn on and off, so if you want to scour the net for products or news, it is the way to go. If you want to view personal web pages or see high quality images, simply turn it down or off. The option is yours. Eventually you figure out when it is best to have on or off. We will be adding various features in the future, such as a quick way to load a page with all or some graphics uncompressed, without having to turn off the Accelerator. We are also looking into and are going to fix the Airport problem, which was a known concern before we released. We wanted to release the app before the end of the year, which would function properly for the majority of our users, who are single computer dial-up users. There are a few other mods we will make so that it works properly for all connection types and configurations.
There are many other functions in Mac TA 2004. You can sync all of your Apple Address Book contacts with our webmail address book, which is great for those who may need to look up contact information while out of town (away from your computer) or for those who use our spamBlocker feature. spamBlocker can be set up (highest level) to cross check your address book, in which emails from those in your address book come into your Inbox, while others are placed in a 'Suspect folder' on the server, to be viewed separately. You can quickly add those people to your address book at that point. Once your address book has most of your contacts included, this saves you lots of time and hassle, since you do not have to download all the spam to your computer, then delete it. This app also includes the ability to view your emails on the server before having to download them, notifies you, via alerts, of emails that have just come in. You access all of your EarthLink sites, including My Account and your Start page quickly and can hide the task panel and use a menu bar extra instead, thus clearing it from your desktop.
This app has only had 2 releases, so it is in its infancy. We are continuing to increase the feature set and will have 2 releases in 2004 that will include major components, as well as the ability to personalize it and modify preferences for individual use. We are also committed to making it useful for our broadband (DSL, Satellite, etc) customers.
I am not sure what happened and would like to personally assist those who had problems. If you have had any problems or have ideas for new features, please use the feedback link in the EarthLink module on the task panel. I answer all feedback emails. The Mac team here is open to ideas and consider each and every customer desired function.
Stay tuned, as EarthLink is Appleâ??s chosen ISP and is committed to Mac development. We have a Mac-only development and QE team, and will continue to support our Mac customers as we always have.
Thanks,
William Harrison

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />It DOES work with Safari. However, the way it speeds up pages is by using extra cache and reducing the quality of .jpg and .gif images. If you can tolerate this, then maybe it's worth it for your use. I don't really like it, and don't find it useful. It won't work properly with PPP's menu bar (won't connect properly), and it didn't set up my account properly -- I had to set up from previous settings (although it does have this option). I just DON'T like it. I'd rather have crisp, beautiful pages that load slower, than crappy looking pages that load a little faster.
Acceleration works with ANY BROWSER...

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />It does work with Safari.. I'm using it right now in fact. Accellerator is a feature which trades image quality for faster loading speeds of web pages. It is also a caching system which reuses previously loaded graphics to enhance speed of surfing on previously viewed pages. It works as an http: proxy server, inserting itself between the internet connection and the browser.. It doesn't matter which browser you use, the proxying is done via System Preferences..
If you do not see the difference in image quality (lower) and loading speeds (higher), it is likely because you have old cache data in the computer for those images (browser cache, not Earthlink), or you have not restarted the computer to make sure everything is fully installed and loaded.
Suggestions: After installing, even though it does not explicitly tell you to restart, do it anyways after clearing your Safari browser cache.
I do have to complain about the Airport aspect.. I have four Macs linked via Airport (software base station) to a single dialup (yes painful-hence my need for Accellerator!). The dialup connected Mac uses an internal modem, and it is the only Mac with the accellerator software installed (as its the server for the others, they do not need the software!)... The other Macs are recieving the internet via Airport just fine, but every time the access the net, Accellerator nolonger works because the proxy settings are messed up by Airport and vice-versa.
Recommend only for a single dial-up computer which does not use any form of internet connection sharing..
Be careful of this thing.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />If you're using an Airport, this program won't see it, and everything in your DSL or cable modem network files will be erased. This is basically a worthless item for Mac users. Okay for Windows wonks on dial-up, I suppose.
