Dwarf Fortress is a throwback to the single-player fantasy games of the 1980s, with graphics (or lack thereof) to match. Dwarf Fortress generates a new world every time you play. The world is rather elaborate, with elevation maps, rainfall and drainage overlays, vegetation growth, and several other environmental factors all available to allow you to figure out how to control the land. Add in the basic game mechanic of a bunch of dwarves who need to build a fortress and search for gold in the mountains and you have a rather in-depth simulation crossed with a strategy game.

Dwarf Fortress graphics are all ASCII. The color codes and characters used represent the type of terrain. You are represented by a single ASCII character on the larger map. If you played a game called Rogue back in the '80s or early '90s, this is all familiar. For those who are used to high-resolution graphics, this game is going to be just plain weird.

There's a lot of hidden depth to Dwarf Fortress, but it is going to take a good bit of time to learn the game and figure out strategy. If you can get by the lack of graphics, there's rewarding gameplay here. We have had games that last a month of regular play, but you have to be willing to immerse yourself in the fantasy and commit to the game to get the most out of it. For old-school gamers, Dwarf Fortress is a hit. For others, it may be too unusual.

Developer’s Description

Control an adventurer or dwarven outpost in a randomly generated and persistent world.

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress. Prepare to guide your stout charges to fortune in a world fraught with many perils. You'll begin by creating your world and watching an animation of the region's history. Once this process is completed, you can prepare a group of dwarves and send them out to seek wealth deep in the mountains. As you dig deeper and more dwarves take up residence in your outpost, your doings will attract attention, both wanted and unwanted. Deal with challenges as they arise, and you might one day find that your fortress has grown to become the capital of the kingdom.

Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world. The world is randomly generated with distinct civilizations spanning over 1000 years of detailed history, dozens of towns, hundreds of caves and regions with various wildlife. The world persists as long as you like, over many games, recording historical events and tracking changes. Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in the mountain. Defend yourself against attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness and the depths. Support the nobility as they make demands of your populace. Keep your dwarves happy and read their thoughts as they work and relax. Play an adventurer and explore, quest for glory or seek vengeance. Meet adversaries from previous games. Recruit people in towns to come with you on your journey. Explore without cumbersome plot restrictions. Seamlessly wander the world -- up to 197376 x 197376 squares total--or travel more rapidly on the region map. Accept quests from the town and civilization leaders. Retire and meet your old characters. Bring them along on an adventure with a new character or reactivate them and play directly.
