DESlock promises to encrypt your files, folders, and e-mails. It also includes a file shredder. While it works fine, the program seems to be cobbled together.

Installing DESlock was a long process. When you first run the program, you'll have to set up a key. A wizard walks you through the process, which involves entering your e-mail address. It took us a few minutes to get acquainted with the program, because it isn't very cohesive. Accessing each feature requires a different action. Clicking on the taskbar shortcut reveals the program options; right-clicking on the file or folder reveals the encryption tool; dragging and dropping a file to the desktop icon shreds it. The file shredder worked just fine. The encryption feature also worked well. We right-clicked on a file, selected the encryption option, entered our key, and the program quickly produced the encrypted file on our desktop. Clicking the same file takes you through the decryption process, which was just as fast and easy. We were disappointed, however, to find that the e-mail encryption feature only works for Outlook. You can't set up Web-based e-mail programs, a feature found in other programs.

The 60-day trial is more than enough time to play around with the program. Still, there are plenty of free, fully functional encryption tools that handle more than Outlook.

Version 4.4.167 has fixed a problem where a users session was not being released when logging out of Windows or when a Remote Desktop Session is closed.

I love the intuitive drag n drop file/folder encryption! Want to encrypt a file or folder? Just specify a passphrase or select the appropriate key from your keyring and it's as good as DONE. Don't want to worry about someone reading a file you deleted? Simply right click on the file(s) or folder(s) and send it to the DESLock+ Shredder. Another nice feature that no one else offers ;) is the ability to move the keyring to a USB Flash Drive. It's nice having the security and bragging rights of two factor authentication. If you thinking about buying encryption software for a home PC or workstation skip everything else and buy DESLock+. I have BETA tested PGP, Truecrypt, FileCrypt, Steganos Security Suite, File Encryption XP, and many others for the non-for-profit organization I work for. Most other encryption products force the user to create a container(s) file. How nice it would be if container(s) became corrupted? Not to mention doing backups? What a pain backing up a whole container(s) every time a file is changed. True there are some products like (insert name here) that will encrypt individual files but then you have to decrypt and re-encrypt them after usage. How many people are going to that for very long? DESLock+ support is top notch as well! I have been working with deskey since 3 years great support and the encryption is great. security is great.

when u connect to external system which does not have deskey installed ur usb external hardisk it encryption work and u cannot open the file but show the file names.

Pros
Being able to use 4 encryption keys makes the email encryption much more useable - nice touch. I have now transferred, my license to my thumbdrive, so not only can I encrypt the contents of my thumbdrive, I can decrypt on whatever PC I want to use. Also a shredder facility for secure deletion - with all this ID theft stuff in the news, that makes a lot of sense. I cant believe this is still free for private use.

3.2 is a free of charge update for existing users. FREE for personal use and 60-day trial for everyone else. Email encryption - now with multiple encryption keys you can share a key with other users and keep your emails (and attachments) strictly private. You now have the ability to move your licence to any USB memory stick, which makes your licence portable, and gives the extra security of being able to unplug to logout. All this added to file encryption, folder encryption, the ability to create a mounted encrypted volume etc. plus a secure delete facility.

Encrypting folders and files works great and the Outlook e-mail plug-in has given me no problems.

So I have enjoyed DESlock and thought it did a great job, until disaster struck. First, the DESlock website, if you look hard enough, says that DESlock 3.2 should not be used on computers with any Symantec or McAfee products! ouch! Second, the mount manager is very flaky. Connecting a USB mass storage device before logging into Windows resulted in complete data loss on one of my encrypted volumes, the entire volume was corrupted. (the encrypted volume tried to mount on the same drive letter the USB drive was assigned.) It seems throughout the products lifecycle the mount manager has been a problem. Use caution and make frequent backups if using this feature!

According to the rest who left comment's it's free and a descent tool.But I dont know cause I can't test it.

In order to make it work you must first register and give your email address.But what if you don't like it then you've already given them your email address.They should let me test it first before I register.Also it loads in the system tray and uses up ram,look I don't need something running all the time just when I need it to( like ad-aware se for instance).Without being able to test it I stay neutral.

This is the first time I've tried an encryption tool and kept it after the demo ended. It really does what they say without any of the usual problems. I've got a mountable file on my thumb drive, an encrypted folder on my desktop and encrypted email in my outlook folders. No need to delete the adult humour before the kids see it anymore ;)

I still need some way to do a secure delete.

I downloaded this trial to see if it would protect our laptop users' data. Deslock did exactly what we needed, allowing you encrypt all your exisiting folders, or create an encrypted drive. The email encryption is great too - don't have to worry about the boss reading your (encrypted) email! Really easy to use, straightforward to setup and you don't have to be an encryption whizz to understand whats going on. Have put in a recommendation to buy this for the company's requirement, but am going back to register with my personal email address to get my free copy for my own use!
