D2X-XL is an enhanced version of D2X, the OpenGL modification of the classic 6dof shooter game Descent 2. D2X-XL is available for MS Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. It is well documented and maintained.Although D2X-XL contains a lot of enhancements and new features, it is still fully backwards compatible to every other Descent 2 version. As many fixes restore features of the original Descent 2 that were missing in D2X (like availability of all cockpit views, or working mouse steering), it is even closer to them than D2X itself.

I play both the Windows and Mac versions (both on PPC and Intel), and frankly can't tell the difference once I start play. I appreciate the developer's continued support and desire to keep fixing issues. That this port of an old DOS program now runs as a Universal Mac app on both PPC and Intel just tickles me. Also love the fact that even the cheat codes still work! :)

Plays great on my Mac mini, it's wonderful that this old classic is once again playable on modern operating systems. Make sure to read the readme document included with the download and follow the instructions carefully. I ended up not being able to just copy the plain old files directly from my Descent 2 CD and instead had to actually install Descent 2 on my Windows XP machine, then copy the files from the install directory to the data folder (which you create) on my mac. Once again, top notch!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com. Did some experimenting and finally got it running at least on Descent II. First make sure the SDL folder is placed in the main library/frameworks. Next all I finally did was do a regular install of Descent II from the Original Disk. Next just drop the new Descent d2x...app. into the folder along with everything else. Don't remove the regular Descent II application file. Just double click on the new Descent app. and it should run. I had a couple of crashes during the first run or two but seemed to smooth out later.

As with the original OS X D2X builds, the movie files from my D2 CD won't play, even after I followed the troubleshooting steps outlined on the D2X-XL homepage. I guess it's still saddled with the issue of the movie files being different on the Mac CDs. Also, full screen isn't active, even after making the requisite changes in the .ini file.

The application crashes immediately upon starting up. Until this problem is resolved I'm afraid my opinion of this price of software can only be poor.
